West Marches genealogy and family history research
Discussion and questions about the history of the region are on topic as they apply to genealogy and family history research in the former West Marches, roughly 1249 to 1609 CE. The West Marches were created in "a treaty between Henry III of England and Alexander III of Scotland in 1249 as an attempt to control the Anglo-Scottish border by providing a buffer zone," according to "The Office of Warden of the Marches; its Origin and Early History". Oxford Journals (https://academic.oup.com/ehr/article-abstract/XXXII/CXXVIII/479/408047). The Scottish Marches era "came to an end during the first decade of the 17th century with the creation of the Middle Shires, promulgated after the personal union of Scotland and England under James VI of Scotland (James I of England)." Wikipedia, citing Act anent fugitive persones of the borders to the in countrey (1609). Read more about the region and history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_Marches
