Hi Zopf, Zopff or Zoph,
My great grand father was born Lawrence Charles Zopf, March 3 1881 or 1882, in
Kankakee, Illinois. He was the son of John Lawrence Zopf and Barbara Tschill of Kankakee,
IL. Most of this information as been researched by my cousin at his website:
http://www.stanford.edu/~lucien/GENEAL/WC_TOC.HTM#CNTC
Not much is known about the Zopf's, but this is certain. My great grandfather
changed the spelling from "Zopf" to "Zoph" so you might try that in
your research. He ended up in San Francisco, CA, where he married himself a newly
immigrated Irish girl by the name of Mary Agnes Hoey. He
was a printer by trade and could move anywhere and get a job instantly. He and Mary lived
for a time in Los Angeles from what I'm told 1910-11. As far as I know he had no
family in California. Mary however had quite a few relatives that immigrated to the San
Francisco area in the late 1800's - early 1900's, which could be the reason why
he never returned to Illinois. Another reason could be that he died fairly young - 49
yrs. Larry & Mary had 6 children; 3 girls and 3 boys. My grandmother was the oldest
girl and I'm told my great grandfather's favorite. Her name was Evelyn Mary Zoph.
"Evelyn" named after one of Larry's sisters and "Mary" after her
mother. She was born July 4, 1912 in S.F. at the of home Frank Smith & Catherine Hoey
Smith. Evelyn Mary Zoph married my grandfather William B. Schwabe in San Francisco's
St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in 1931. They have two children and four
grandchildren - myself included.
Well I guess that wraps up my story.... How many Zopf's, Zopff's or Zoph's
does that make now?
