There have long been rumors that there were four brothers who emigrated at apparently
different times to 18th century PA. (Unfortunately, there has been disagreement as the
names of the four). Is it possible that this Alterman Zinn was also the father of some
four different Zinn sons who went apparently separately to Cocalico Twp of Lancaster Co
PA? The first might have been Gearhart Zinn who arrived on the Thistle in 1730. Soon
after came Herman Zinn, who emigrated on the ship Mary (where his name is listed as Sin)
in 1732. Both were born in Mekram (now Meckenheim) Germany, and both families became
associated with the Ephrata Cloiser in Cocalico Twp. (Gerheart was associated with the
cloister prior to becoming a Moravian and moving to NC; while two of Herman Zinn’s
children, George and Sister Veronica Zinn, were buried within the Cloister walls.) Later,
the reported 1749 emmigrant Jacob Zinn also settled in Cocalico Twp. And also both
paternal and maternal rela!
tives of my ggg grandfather John Zinn (b. 1763, Berks Co PA) seem al most certainly to
have also lived in Cocalico Twp. between the years 1756 and 1796.
Neither Maurice Gross nor Mabel McFatridge-McCloskey mention an Alterman Zinn in their
two books on Zinn‘s. Can you confirm his identity as the father of the 1749 emigrant
Jacob? .
