Bev, got your note and was thrilled! Thank you for responding. We have
thought for a long time that John L. Zinn passed away out in California. We
have a photocopy of a letter he wrote to Mattie asking her to come out to
visit him and that is the last any of us know of him. At any rate, we lost
track of him. We are not even sure when he died - much less WHERE he died.
Interesting that he is considered a pioneer and we just thought he was a
lost relative. I live in Fort Worth, Texas, but will begin researching
Shasta County, CA history immediately.
I would love to get a copy of the picture of Sarah Rebecca and Mattie. I
never turn down a photo - scanned or not. Tell you husband to fire up the
scanner!
The Creswell name factors in this way: Mattie married John Creswell. I
don't have a Martha Creswell or a Henry B. Zinn in my database but that
doesn't mean they don't exist. I am behind in updating this file, as wife,
motherhood (8 and 9 year-olds), city councilwoman, and IBMer occupy most of
my time. And if I don't get our taxes done tomorrow, the IRS will probably
suck even more of it. I've read some notes recently on the Henry B. thing.
Someone else is looking for him, too. Have to think about that one. Do you
have birth/death dates for Martha and Henry B.? It would be interesting to
see if these people could be siblings marrying siblings from other families.
It was not uncommon.
Do you use a genealogy software program? I'm using Family Tree Maker 7.0.
I will be happy to send you a file of John L. Zinn's descendants if you would
like it. Just let me know. It's good to hear from you. Hope your trip was
successful.

Hi, Susie,
I'm back...didn't quite finish painting our little cabin (shack) in the
foothills of El Dorado County, but sure enjoyed being there. The grass is
still green and beautiful and we saw two wild turkeys, a cottontail, a
jackrabbit, a small rattlesnake, a zillion pollywogs, mating lizzards,
several fuzzy caterpillars, and some buzzards. For us city dwellers, that
amounts to a fair number of wild critters! We would have stayed longer but
rain was forecast and the road in from the highway is not paved.
I haven't had time to look for Matta Matilda and Sarah Rebecca's photo yet,
but will tomorrow. Sorry to make you wait so long.
I don't have actual dates for Henry B. and Martha, but I did find them in the
Missouri 1870 census. They were living in, Cressville, Mountain Township
then. Henry B.'s age is listed as 32, so his dob would be c. 1838 and Martha
was listed as 26, so her dob would be c. 1844. They had children named
Abraham (9), John B. (5), and Melvina (2) at that time, but had additional
children later. The book Heritage of the Hills...A Delaware County History
by the Delaware County Historical Society (OK), states they raised a family
of seven children and shows pictures of Henry B. and Martha outsie their log
home near Dennis, Oklahoma, in 1915.
As far as I know, John Lafayette Zinn didn't have a brother named Henry B.,
but I have wondered if they might have been cousins.
I use Family Origins but also have Family Tree Maker 7.0.
More later.
Love, Bev
