A Sad Suicide
Last Monday evening Miss Cora E. Zink, daughter of Buck Zink, who has been living for some
time with Mrs. Thomas who resides on Virginia Street, came to town and purchased some
arsenic. Returning home she met a friend and told her that she was going to take the
arsenic but of course shw thought to be joking. She went on home however, and about half
after three o'clock she took two spoonsful of the arsenic. Mrs. Thomas found that she
was very sick and bout half after five o'clock Dr. Stroud was sent for and it was
found that the young lady had taken the poison with suicidal intent. Dr. Stroud called
Dr. George F. Powell in consultation and the two physicians worked with the patient but
could no save her from the powerful dose of poison she had taken. The best they could do
was alleviate the pain she was suffering, and about four o'clock Tuesday morning she
died. The following letter to Mrs. Thomas was found:
Mrs. Thomas, Dear Friend: I will write you a few lines for the last time for me to ever
pick up a pencil. I am going to the land where I will have no trouble or sorrow. My
troubles are so great that I can never bear with them. Hiram is the only boy I ever loved
or that I ever will or want to, and I can never love another; and to live and have it
thrown in my face every day! no. I will never do it. So I am gone. Good bye, good bye.
Cora E. Zink
She was about 18 years old and the cause of her suicide is believed to be a disappointment
in love, which is alluded to in the latter part of her letter to Mrs. Thomas, and about
which she had no doubt been teased a great deal. Her chastity is not questioned. Squire
Frank held an inquest over the body Tuesday morning and the coroner's verdict was that
she came to death by poison administered by her own hands. She was buried at College
Mound Tuesday evening. Her death was a sad one and greatly regretted.
