My Great Grndma was Abigail Catherine Zimmerman b 9/13/1871
In Jan 1898 she married Henry (Harry) Ward Clough/Clugh
They had three children; Ward Hastings Clugh b 1898 d 1940, Mary Martha Clugh b 8/1900, d
3/1983 in Ohio, and my Pap, Giles Cramer Clugh b 9/6/1906, d 10/1970.
Abbie, as she was called, was born in Pleasant Hall, PA near Shippensburg, PA. She was the
daughter of Solomon Cramer and Mary Catherine Smith Zimmerman. Solomon was the son of
David Zimmerman and Marie CramerGrandma Abbie had two siblings known to me; a baby sister
who died as an infant, and a brother David Smith Zimmerman. Most of her family is buried
at Pleasant Hall in the Salem Lutheran Church cemetary. She and her husband are buried at
Spring Hill Cemetary, Shippensburg.
I find her fascinating for a variety of reasons. One is that my mom has vivid memories of
a summer spent with her in abt 1938-39. Abbie died in March 1940. I have been able to see
the house she was living in where my mom visited, see the church she attended and took my
mom to, and have many copies of photos of her that I have scanned in from borrowed photos.
The most interesting thing abt her is that she was widowed in 1913, and forced to put
Giles, then age 6, into Scotland School for Veterans Children. He was home with her by we
think age 9, when the two older children got jobs to help financially and when Giles was
old enough to stay alone and help around the housse. Pap would never speak of those years.
We visited there last month as well, and now they fascinate me even more. Could go
forever, but you would all be bored, so I'll stop :) Think I hit the areas mentioned
when you suggested this post.
