John: This is Frederick County's 250th birthday and in "A Star Spangled
Year,
1748-1998" it is stated that Emmittsbirg was founded by Samuel
Emmitt who
was
an Irish immigrant and came to Frederick County in 1757 where he
received
a
patent for 250 acres. He then sold off lots and it became an
overnight
stop
for teamsters moving materials between Baltimore and the west. It
was
originally called Poplar Fields and Silver Fancy. The name was changed
in
1786 to honor its founder.

Hi Folks: I am new to this list. Can any one tell me anything about
the
history of Emmitsburg MD. I believe the founder could have been a
brother
of James Emmitt my GGGgrandfather . Does anyone know his given name
where
he came from and when the town was founded. Any help will be
appreciated.
