According to records in the Bowling Green, OH library prepared by Laurel
(Zimmerman) Beeker: John Peter Zimmerman arrived on ship Friendship at
Philadelphia on 17 Sep 1748, was in the Shenandoah Co, VA censuses taken by
Jost Hite in1783 and Jake Rinker in1785. Married ___ Stover. A son John, born
ca 1765, in Pennsylvania?, married Barbara Cohkenhauer 21 Mar 1786 in Hardy
Co, (West) Virginia, and died at Detroit or Ft Meigs while serving in the War
of 1812.
I haven't found proof that John was a son of John Peter. The book
"Pennsylvania German Pioneers," by Strassburger & Hinke lists a Johann Peter
Zimmerman arriving on the ship Patience at Philadelphia 19 Sep 1749. Johann
Jost Zimmerman and Christian Zimmerman are also listed, but I don't know if
they were related. This book doesn't have a 1748 arrival of the Friendship.
John & Barbara moved their family to Columbiana Co, OH in the early 1800s.
John filed on land near New Lisbon (now just Lisbon) in 1807, but purchase
was completed in 1812 by a son-in-law, James Rogers. John's estate was
administered in 1814. Barbara married John Cameron in 1817 and he became
guardian of her 3 youngest, William, Henry and Mary Ann, in 1818.
John F. Zimmerman, b. 28 Jun 1794 to John & Barbara, was my GGgrandfather. He
married Margaret Kuntz 14 Jan 1819 in Columbiana Co. They moved to Stark Co
about 1830 and to Wood Co about 1853. Margaret apparently died there. John F.
died at his son Michael's home in De Kalb County, Indiana on 1 or 2 Jan 1872.
The obituary states he (like his father) had served in the War of 1812.
I'd like to hear from any descendants or anyone who has comments on the
records mentioned.
These John Zimmermans in Columbiana Co, OH are frequently confused with
another John Zimmerman family that lived in Green Twp, then part of
Columbiana but now in Mahoning. I don't think they were related.
