Hello to all!!
I have been working to update my genealogy page to not only include
surnames, but to also include individuals with that surname. I finished
my ZIMMERMAN(N) list this morning and wanted to invite you to take a
look and see if you might have any connections. I would be happy to
share any other information I might have, should you find something of
interest.
My 4th-great grandfather, George Gottlob ZIMMERMAN(N) was born in
Germany in 1781. He was educated in the universities of Germany
majoring in languages. During the Napoleonic wars he was drafted into
service and soon taken prisoner by the French. The French treated him
so well, he vowed he would never again fight against them, so when the
two countries exchanged prisoners, he managed to escape on a vessel
bound for America (where the second N was dropped from his name). He
settled in Pennsylvania where he apprenticed as a tanner and shoemaker.
A few years later he drifted into a little Dutch settlement near
Harrisburg where he taught school. He met his wife, Julianna HOKE (also
from Germany), married her in 1816, settled in Franklin County, and had
12 children. In 1846 they moved their family to Garden Grove, Iowa and
then in 1851 they moved west and settled in Lehi, Utah where they
remained for the rest of their lives.
I do have information on several generations prior to George Gottlob
ZIMMERMAN, so if you are interested, please let me know. The best of
luck to you all in your research!
