Following is the text of a 1913 note from Miss Lillie
Huston of Carlisle PA concerning the LYNE family.
At the time, my great grandmother was seeking to
join the DAR. If anyone can fill in any blanks,
esp the BEAR or ZIMMERMAN/CARPENTER wives, I'd
appreciate it very much.

My dear Mrs. Appleton
The information you sent me I gave to Miss Halbert.
It is very necessary that you a have a direct line from
yourself back to William Lyne and his father,George Lyne.
I think that I might be able to give you the missing link.
George Lyne died 1788; his wife Salome (Zimmerman Anglicized
afterwards to Carpenter) Lyne died 107. Then it will be
necessary for you to give all of their children, the year of
their birth and to whom married if possible. You get two
Application papers from your Chapter for George Lyne. Then two
more Application papers for William Lyne, born April 12-1749,
died June 12-1822 and his wife Maria (Bear) Lyne died 1826.
Next you give the names of all their children, their birth, and
to whom married. Their daughter Mary Lyne born January 6 - 1780
married Philip Spangler April 28-1807. Am sorry, I do not have the
rest of the dates. Their son, George Spangler, married Nancy Myers.
By writing to your Aunts you might be able to get the births
and dates of deaths of your line. Mother gave me the information
as Mary Lyne was her Aunt, a sister to her father (David Lyne).
You have two ancestors in the Revolutionary War. The father
George and his three sons, David, William, and Abraham all served
in the same company. Penna Archives Series 2nd Volume 15 page 626.
If you wish you can add to what you have that the old Bible is still
in the family also (the sword of William Lyne is still in the family
(you add this to William's paper) My papers were both accepted so I
don't think you will have any trouble. I put in my paper my ancestor
assisted in Revo war as minute man. It is only necessary to give the
names of all the children, etc of the man who served in the war. After
you get your 4 application papers you will understand what I mean.
Any member of the DAR will explain how you go about in filling
the papers our. If their (sic) us any thing you do not understand, write
and I will try to make it plainer. May I also make a suggestion to
join as a Life member $25.00. You will find it will be much cheaper
in the end. We have several members who have already paid in about
$35.00 and next April talking of raising both yearly dues
and Life Member dues. We expect three new members next week at our
DAR meeting and they will join as Life Members. I am a Life Member.
When you fill out your application papers sell Lyne as that is the
way it is in the Archives. Did want to answer your letter at once,
but my sister, her little daughter and husband were home from Kansas
and then last week was our County Fair. Now everything has settled
down to be quiet again. What is the name of your Chapter? Do hope
you will have no trouble in following out your line. A few dates of
the Spanglers on down to your generation's all that is necessary, Just
the year if births, deaths, and married. Will be so glad to welcome
you as a DAR member. Would be very glad to hear from you soon.
Your cousin,
Lillie Huston
