Hi,
This is for any male who is or could be related to one or more of the ancestors of the
people listed in FTDNA "Carpenter Cousins" Group 5, but for some reason has not
had their Y-DNA tested. This Carpenter Cousins Group 5 is made up of Zimmermans and
Carpenters with their ancestry goind back to Germany and Steffisburg, Switzerland.
If you think that your ancestry might extend back to this Zimmerman/Carpenter family, now
is the time to verify this connection. Genetic Y-Chromosome Scientists provide estimates
of the time frame for being related. These estimates depend on the number of markers
tested. The more markers tested, and the higher the numbers of markers that match, the
higher the likelihood that a common ancestor occurred more recently. Currently FTDNA
provides testing of the Y-DNA for 12-markers, 25-markers, 37-markers, and 67-markers. The
minimum recommended is 25-markers. From here, you can upgrade if something looks
promising. Why go to this expense? Believe me, it is cheap when compared to flying
coast-to-coast and paying for accommodations at the same time. Granted, some traveling is
required in order to complete the paper trail. And when the paper trail shows up a
brickwall, or you don't know which fork to take, Y-DNA test results can quickly become
like your GPS system. It's not that we like getting lost. we just like to know where
we are at all times. FTDNA Y-DNA test results can help us with respect to finding our
ancestors if we have the necessary paper trail. Then, even if we don't have the
paper-trail complete, Y-DNA testing can help to better navigate the brick walls and other
road blocks, helping us to complete the paper trail.
Like to have more information? Log onto
www.ftdna.com . Here you can read all about DNA
testing. Take your time and read to understand the process. the if you are interested in
looking at the Carpenter Cousins - Group 5, from the
www.ftdna.com website, proceed as
follows:
1. Select: Projects
2. Then scroll down and select "C(389)" this number is continually increasing,
however select "C"
3. Scroll down and then select "Carpenter Cousins"
4. Then select "members.cox.net/JohnCarpenter/index.htm"
5. You are now at the "Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project"
6. Scroll down to "DATA", which will be in Red. Then scroll further down to
"Group 5", and there you will see 11 numbers under the name Hans, assigned to
this Group, they are called ID numbers. If you are interested in which is my number,
please email me.
7. You may wonder who are the ancestors of these people? While you are still at the
Carpenter Cousins Group-5, click on either of the numbers listed for Group 5; this will
take you to a chart showing the ancestral lines provided by the testees for each of the
numbers listed. Example - with the chart displayed: reading from left to right, you will
see 44436, 73497, sm29, etc.
If you find a list of ancestors that agree with your paper-trail of ancestors there is a
good chance that you share a comon ancestor with one or more of the people involved with
Group 5.
If you are now encouraged to have your DNA tested, goback to the step 3, where you
selected "Carpenter Cousins" and then scroll down towards the bottom of the page
and here you can select the level of Y-DNA testing that you desire. Again, the 25-markers
test or higher is recommended.
Thanks and Best of Luck in finding your Zimmerman/carpenter ancestors.
Bob Carpenter
