It has been a while since I was on the Zimmerman List. I have completed
my tree up one line and am now trudging down another. Here is all that I
have on the Zimmermans of interest. They have no earlier kin in Canada,
as they were the first. I am searching for information which may be held
in the Cayuga area, re where John was living in about 1850...information
on his half brother Henry Young, who came to Canada with him, and
remained on the farm, after John moved to Burnaby, east of Wainfleet.
And possible mention, somewhere of the family background in Germany. I
have tried to get someone in Germany to search the birth records, but
have been unsuccessful to find an SKS to help.
1. John [maybe Johann or Johannes, etc.] Zimmerman, s/o Jacob and
Elizabeth Zimmerman of Marburg, Hesse, Germany, was born on June 10,
1827, in Marburg, Hesse, Germany. The town sits in the wooded Lahn river
valley in the state of Hesse. He moved to Canada, with his half brother,
Henry Young [maybe another spelling], and settled in Cayuga South, east
of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, on or about 1850, according to his obit,
which was reported in the "Peoples Press," edited by the Welland Tribune
[Welland, Ontario, Canada] of Friday, March 27, 1908. He died March 20,
1908, in Burnaby, Ontario, east of Wainfleet, Ontario.
2. John married Charlotte Claydon d/o Henry and Mariah Claydon [of
England]; bc. 1841; at Morgan's Point Methodist Church, about 1863-1864.
It is not known if her family accompanied her from England, or how she
arrived in the position of being available for marriage.
3. Issue: Martha [b.c. 1864], Alice [my g-g-mother; b. October 25,
1869], and Charlotte, b.c. 1867.
4. Martha married August Hoto/Hauto of Stromness, south of Dunnville,
Ontario, Canada; no dates are available and no data on August has
appeared yet, but it is assumed that they married at the M-P M-Church
around 1884-5.
5. My g-g-mother: *Alice married Elgin Alva or Elgin Andrew Thompson, of
Beamsville, Ontario, Canada, also at the M-P-M Church in 1901. Issue:
John Claydon [1901][my grandfather], Hugh William [c. 1903], Charles
[aft. 1903] and Alva, who died as an infant [bef. 1909].
6. Charlotte married Curtis Moore of Thorold, Ontario, Canada, [c.
1901]. Curtis died about 1948 and Charlotte died January 17, 1963.
Charlotte and Curtis may have retired to "the homestead in Wainfleet"
following their marriage as per the obit for John Zimmerman, 1908.
