My great great grandfather was John Zimmerman (born May 13, 1818 in Switzerland). He came
to the U.S. and settled in Pennsylvania in 1833.
He maried Susanna Catherine Schranz, (born May 14, 1823) on March 22, 1841.
Is there a chance that they are the John and Susanna who are named on the quilt?

Subject: ZIMMERMAN 1841/1842 SIGNATURE QUILT - 80+ NAMES/ PA & DE
Hi listers;
I am working on a voluntary research project for a Colorado Museum.
I have now transcribed, to the best of my ability, all the names
on a gorgeous 1841/1842 signature quilt that is in their collection. It
was made for Susanna Zimmerman, primarily by persons living in
Montgomery County, PA. There is one signature from Philadelphia and
some from DE. Any help you can give me in determining the relationship
and understanding the lives of the signers will be greatly appreciated.
I am very interested in the religious affiliation of the signers as well.
I will be writing a history of the families for the Museum files and
exhibits.
There are over 80 names, many of which I'm sure are spelled differently
from what I've written below. Names on signature quilts are sometimes
very hard to read. The quilt is an exquisite record of the love held by
others
for Susanna and I hope to do it justice.
Thank you very much in advance for responding.
Sincerely,
Jan Thomas

Hi Jan,
With the immense amount of Zimmerman{n}'s in this country and even in that
region, I think it would be virtually impossible to help if we don't have
the first names. Assuming that all of the last names are Zimmerman, a list
of the first names, transcribed to the best of your ability in reading such
an old quilt, would be the best way to start.
I am sure you can understand how impossible it would be to assist with who
these people possibly were or how they may have been related to Susanna
without a better knowledge of who all worked on the quilt. Back in those
days, they had alot of quilting bees and each signature was a persons
section of the quilt. Although not all signature quilts were made as an
anniversary gift for the head {monarch} of the family, the majority of
signature quilts were. Although they had quilting bees almost all the time,
they had them for newly weds or mothers to be, etc. As stated though, those
quilts usually weren't signature quilts or signed pieces.
If you can send the names you can make out and if the last names are
different than Zimmerman, perhaps one of us will recognize the family and
be able to assist you from there.
It's wonderful to know these quilts still exist and weren't eaten by moths
or discarded along the way,
Have a great day,
Debie Blindauer
