Hi....
I am posting some info here, and I'll also contact you by email, but I wanted the
information to be available for anyone who is searching for info on William Henry
Zimmerman.
I don't have much info, but here is what I do have:
Franklin (Frank) Elmer Zimmerman was born on September 15th, 1873, I was told in New
Castle, Indiana. I don't find any information on any census' of the time of this
family being in Indiana. All siblings, older and younger, are born in Ohio (according to
LDS). He is the child of William Henry Zimmerman and Sarah Pry. Siblings of Franklin
Elmer are:
Amanda (b. 1866, Pike County, Ohio)
Emma R. (b. 26 Feb., 1868, Pike County, Ohio)(married to Newt Vandegriff, 2 June 1900)
George W. (b. 2 Nov. , 1869, Seal Township, Ohio)
Thomas E. (b. April 28, 1876, d. July 29, 1965 - this information comes from the
grandchild of Thomas E.)
Parents of Frank (et al):
William Henry Zimmerman, was born in Pike County in 1834. He died in Pike county on Feb.
9, 1911, aged 77. He married to Sarah Pry, on 13 Feb., 1853 (according to Pike County
Marriages, 1815-1915). This same source also shows a marriage of a William H. Zimmerman
to a Mary H. Pry, dated 19 Dec., 1865. LDS shows all of the children, listed above, as
being those of William and Sarah, however, the grandson of Thomas Zimmerman states that
William is buried at the same cemetary of a "Mary Zimmerman", who is buried with
him, and listed as his wife. I remain unsure of this connection.
Sarah Zimmerman, appears on the 1870 Pike County Census, with children listed, but no
husband on census.
William Henry Zimmerman served in the Civil War. He enlisted as a private on 3 Sept.,
1861, and was discharge for "piles" as a SGT on 21 Dec., 1863. He drew a
pension for his service, in Company E, 33rd Ohio Voluntary Infantry. The medals that he
earned in the Civil War remain in the family of Thomas, and his family. I have photos for
anyone interested.
William Henry Zimmerman is buried at the Zimmerman family plot, corner of Zimmerman Road
and Loop Road, in Pike County, Ohio, on the corner of what is Corb's land. The plot
is in POOR condition and needs some help.
About Sarah Pry, William's wife:
She was born in 1838 in Pike County, Ohio. Child of Daniel Pry (born 1799 in Virginia),
and Eleanor Woodrough (born 1805 in Pike County, Ohio). Daniel and Eleanor married on 10
November, 1825.
Parents of William Henry Zimmerman:
Henry Zimmerman (born in Virginia in 1798, died March 2, 1848). Married to Mary Chew
(born 1800, Virginia) on 6 April, 1848. As this would make them 48, and 50 years old at
the time of this marriage, it is possible that they were together for quite some time
before they actually married. Evidence of this fact is that they appear on the 1850 Pike
County census, when they would have been married for only two years. Either this is true,
or these children may be from a possible earlier marriage of Henry, but I have found no
evidence of this. This census lists their children (at least the male children) as:
James T.
William H.
David B.
Abraham B.
Joseph C.
Henry must have been in Pike County as early as 1845, if not sooner. He received a land
patent at the land office in Chillicothe in July, 1845, for some 40 acres (I guess this is
part of what makes up the land that was passed down to his son, William Henry, then to
Frank, and now what is known as 'Corb's land'). Henry was a farmer.
Henry's family:
I do not know, at this time, who were his parents. If he was born in Virginia, then this
is where we should search. Keep in mind that parts of Kentucky were considered Virginia
at this time.
Due to the fact that the other land patents (belonging to those shown below), and
adjoining Henry's, were issued within 5-10 years his patent, give indication that they
would have either been siblings of Henry, or possibly, grown children:
Thomas Zimmerman (patent issued 12/15/1854)
John Zimmerman (patent issued 8/10/1850)
Nancy Zimmerman (patent issued 2/1/1851)
I have a copy of the land patent for Henry, and have access to those of the others named
above if anyone wants a copy of it.
Well, that is it for now.
Email me if you would like to chat about this branch of the family.
