Here is what I have on William H. Zimmerman, who was married to Mary Pry:
William H. Zimmerman, Company E, 33rd O.V.I. (Ohio Volunteer Infantry), information from
his pension record:
Currently married to Mary Hannah Zimmerman, maiden name Pry, he was not previously
married. Married Dec. 28, 1865 at Piketon, Ohio by Abraham Bumgarner, J.P. (Note: Pike
Co. Probate Marriage records has the date as Dec. 29-K.V.) Children currently living:
Ella Z., born Feb 5, 1870
Robert Newton Z., born March 17, 1871
Thomas Oak Z., born April 28, 1876
Cora Louisa Z., born Feb. 26, 1879
Date of the above information: May 26, 1898, submitted to the Dept. of Interior, Bureau
of Pensions
An affidavit by Andrew Martin of Pike County Ohio says that William died Feb. 3, 1911.
Mary was dropped from the pension roll due to her death of Feb. 11, 1920.
His military record says that he was mustered in Sept. 3, 1861 and mustered out Jan. 12,
1864. It also says that he enlisted as a Private in January 1864, was promoted to
Corporal Sept. 1864, and promoted to Sgt. April 1865. Both these terms of service are
with the 33rd O.V.I.
Death record information for William H. Zimmerman, certificate number 10982, available
from the Ohio Historical Society:
Died Scioto Twp, Pike County, Ohio, Feb. 3, 1911, age 69 years, five months, cause of
death angina pectoris, male, white, occupation farmer, married, born Sept. 3, 1841, Pike
Co. Ohio, buried Towner Cemetery, undertaker Fred Kress of Piketon Ohio, father Geo.
Zimmerman born Pike Co., mother Cora Pry born Pike Co., informant Thomas O. Zimmerman of
Piketon RFD. (Note: Another source says his mother was named Eliza, and might even have
been Sarah-K.V.)
The cemetery abstract book for Scioto and Union Townships list a Hawk Cemetery on the
right side of Loop Road that has two people named Towner buried in it (and five other
Zimmermans), where there is a tombstone for William H. Zimmerman, Civil War, enlisted
Sept. 3, 1861, discharged June 20, 1865, pvt. Co. C., 33 Ohio Inf.; 1st Reg. OVHA. (Note:
I don't know why the 1st Reg. OVHA is listed, because I see nothing in his military
file that says he switched to another unit. He appears on the company muster out roll for
Co. E, 33rd OVI at Louisville, KY, dated July 12, 1865. Perhaps he was confused with the
other Wm. H. Zimmerman, who was in that regiment, when they erected the stone-some
veterans did reenlist in another unit. -K.V.)
From a Waverly, Pike County newspaper dated Feb. 9, 1911: Funeral by
Fred Kress at Beaver for Mr. Wm. Zimmerman of Mt. Gilead, age 70. (Note: Possibly Mt.
Gilead is one of those little communities in Pike County that no longer exist, such as
Shyville.-K.V.)
