Dear Rita,
I have researched Carpenters and therefore Zimmermans for many years. I
published Carpenters A Plenty some years ago. I traced a Zimmerman family
which took the name of Carpenter and lived in the area of present Lincoln,
Gaston, Catawba, and Cleveland Counties, North Carolina. Your John
Zimmerman is not related to my Carpenters.
I have two possibilities for you:
1. John Zimmerman may be related to "Moravian" Christian Zimmerman. He
lived and died in the Winston-Salem, NC area but two of his sons, David and
Samuel moved to Lincoln County, NC. David had a son John but he lived and
died in Lincoln County. Samuel moved to Gibson County, Indiana. Some
descendants sent me some information on this family but they did not list a
son named John. Your John could be a son of this Samuel but your answer
probably lies in Indiana.
2. Your John may be descended from Michael Zimmerman. He descended from a
Montgomery and Northhampton County, Pennsylvania family. He came with his
mother and step-father to North Carolina. In 1825 his land in Lincoln
County was divided among his heirs, which most likely were children. One
heir mentioned was a John Zimmerman. This Michael owned land in Lincoln
County and in Burke County. Since your John's wife was born in Burke
County, it is possible that this is your family. I have no further
information on the descendants of Michael Zimmerman except that some of them
moved to Cape Girardeau and Bollinger Counties of Missouri.
I hope this information is helpful.
Once you make a connection I would really like to know since I have
attempted to chronicle all these families.
Good luck,
Robert Carpenter

Subject: [ZIMMERMAN] John Zimmerman, NC 1860
According to the 1860 Cherokee County NC census, John Zimmerman was
born c
1810 in Lincoln County NC. His wife, Easter, was born about the same time
in Burke County NC. Others living in the household are Henderson 21,
David
N 20, Sidney 18, George 16, Nathan 13, Margaret 23, and Mary 1. In 1870
the
family resides in Clay County, and in May 1880 John dies. Easter, his
widow, resides with son Nathan's family in Cherokee County. The 1880
mortality schedule lists John's age as 72, and that his parents were born
in
Germany. I am a descendant of Sidney and I'm looking for other
descendants
as well as parents for John and Easter.
Rita
