Looking for information on John Zimmerman and Barbara Gochenhour,
married in 1786, Shenandoah Valley and moved to Green Township,
Columbiana Co, Ohio in the eary 1800's. Children were Elizabeth,
Margaret, catherine, Sarah, John, Susan, Rachael, Henry, William and Mary.
Any help would be appreciated.
GW Zimmerman
There were two John Zimmermans in Columbiana Co., Ohio at that time. I
believe the one who m. Barbara Gochenhour lived in Center Twp. and a
(perhaps) unrelated John Zimmerman lived in Green Twp.
On 20 Mar 1807, John Zimmerman of Columbiana County filed application #2638
to purchase land in Section 20 Range 3 Township 14 (now Centre township of
Columbiana Co, Ohio). The purchase was completed 30 Jan 1812 in the name of
James Rogers of Columbiana Co, Ohio. [Carol Willsey Bell, C.G., Ohio Lands:
Steubenville Land Office, 1800-1820]. John and Barbara are said to have had a
daughter Catharine who m. James Rogers.
Letters of Administration were issued at the June 1814 term of the court of
common pleas, stating, "...Be it known that Adminsitration of all & singular
the goods & Chattles rights & Credits, which were of John Zimmerman late of
the township of Center in the County aforesaid, deceased, ...." [Probate
Records, Vol 1-3, 1803-1819, Probate Court, Columbiana Co., Ohio, micro no.
0927746, Family History Center, Salt Lake City, Utah.]
The John Zimmerman of Green Twp. is said to have come from Lancaster Co., PA,
where he m. Christina Claycomb, then to somewhere near the Potomac, either in
Maryland or West Virginia, and to Columbiana Co., OH in 1803. (John & Barbara
apparently lived near the Potomac also, but in Hardy Co, WV.)
There is considerable confusion between these two families. For example, some
claim that John & Barbara's daughter Elizabeth m. Lewis Baker. However, the
Green Twp Zims also claim an Elizabeth who m. Lewis Baker. Since Lewis Baker
was involved in the probate records of the Green Twp John Zimmerman, it looks
like that's where he belongs.
