Charlotte Zimmerman, GILMANTON

GILMANTON-Charlotte Zimmerman, 71, of Middle Route, died Jan. 23 at her home. She was
born in Thailand, the daughter of Carle and Madeleine (Andrist) Zimmerman. She earned a
bachelor's of arts degree in philosophy from Radcliffe College in 1956 and a
master's degree in sociology from Louisiana State University. She also earned a Ph.D.
in philosophy and anthropology. Zimmerman moved to Gilmanton after retiring and lived on
the farm formerly owned by her parents. She worked teaching social problems and sociology
for St. Louis University in 1960, completing field work of contemporary Mayan settlements
in the Yucatan for five months as part of her dissertation. She taught at many
universities in the United States and Europe, including the University of Maryland and
Munich, Germany, before retiring. Survivors include a son, Matthias of Concord; a sister,
Constance of Palmetto, Fla.; a brother, Carle of Littleton, Colo.; and a niece. Her
husband, Matthias Buttner, died pre!
viously. Calling hours will not be held. Memorial services will be held in May. In lieu
of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Hampshire Humane Society, P.O. Box
572, Laconia 03247. Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, Laconia, is in charge of the
arrangements.
