Robert,
Thanks so much for getting in touch. I would love to make a trip to
Steffisburg and spend time doing research. In 2004 I made a trip to
Sulzfeld, Baden, Germany. I only spent one day but found lots of data on
the Zimmerman line and met some very interesting people. One of which was
the author of a book that had my Zimmerman linage. With all the tools that
are developing in the twenty first century we may find our common ancestor.

Guy,
I think I am responding to the Guy Zimmerman who descends from the Culpepper
VA Carpenters.
About 20 years ago I printed the history, Carpenters A Plenty, which traced
the Zimmerman/Carpenter families which settled first in Lancaster Co, PA and
then moved to the Lincoln County area of North Carolina. I have over the
years visited your website. When I printed my book I included a very brief
listing for your Culpepper/Madison County, VA Zimmerman/Carpenters. In it I
stated that we could be related but that I had found no documented
relationships at that time. When I read your website and noted that your
Zimmermans moved out of Steffisburg in the middle (I am doing this from
memory) 1600's or so, I felt certain that we were distantly related.
Most of the participants in the Group 5 list are descendants of the Lincoln
County Carpenter Zimmreman family. I am participant #14756; I am copying to
Bob Carpenter, participant #6060, who motivated all of us to participate in
the DNA project. The DNA does prove that we are related and both descend
from the Zimmermans of Steffisburg.
Our Zimmerman family left Steffisburg sometime from 1690-1720. Many
Steffisburg families including the Zimmermans left because they were
Anabaptist. They went to Alsace and became acquainted with Jakob Ammann,
founder of the Amish. Some of the Zimmermans became followers of Ammann.
Peter Zimmerman of Eschery, was an Amish preacher and later was murdered in
Alsace.
The family migrated north to Lorraine in the Vosges Mountains near Salm
around 1713-14. From there they immigrated to America in 1732 on the Pink
Plaisance, Hope in 1733, and Friendship in 1739.
I have searched the Steffisburg Parish records and have the CD. If I may
look up anything, I will be happy to help. I purchased the CD from Picton
Press and it is read only. I printed copies of the parish records when I
researched them at th LDS Library.
Interestingly participant #53199 appears to descend from Hans Zimmerman of
Earl Township, Lancaster County. He and his brother, Christian, arrived on
the Hope in 1733 with an older Nicholas. These extended families of
Zimmermans have countless descendants throughout America.
My problem with my direct line is that I cannot connect between the
Steffisburg parish records and the American immigrants. While in Alsace
most of them failed to attend Lutheran, Reformed, or Catholic churches and
hence few records of baptisms, marriages, etc. exist. So I have a
generational gap.
I am very pleased with DNA as a research tool. It certainly compliments our
other research strategies. Many other Carpenters and Zimmermans belong to
our families but we have not yet connected them. I wonder if my Zimmermans
visited your family as my family traveled through Virginia on their way to
NC!
Sincerely,
Robert Carpenter

I looked in my files and found one William H. Zimmerman b. abt. 1814.
The
only child that I have listed for him is James A. b. abt 1843. I have no
data on a Henry b. in the vicinity of 1811 or John.
In my research over the years I have found three clans of Zimmermans.
Those
that settled in PA, VA, and WI. My guess is that your line is from the PA
clan. I can tie both the PA clan and the VA clan back to Canton of Bern,
Switzerland. I have done a Y-DNA 67 marker test but have not matched up
to
any one yet. You can see some results from the following web page. I am
in
group 5 the very last one.

Do you have any more identifying information on William Zimmerman? I
have a Hiram Frank (1859) that is a descendant of Henry Zimmerman
(1811) who married a Mary Julia and John Zimmerman (1830) who married
a Sarah.
