Elizabeth,
Thanks for the reply, but Maria lived and died in Gerlingen or that
area. Johann Jacob "Jake" Schopf and Christian Schopf were brothers,
and possibly a cousin or other relative of Maria. So I am looking for
Zimmerman's in what is now the Gerlingen, Germany area.
Jake was my ancestor.
Have you used the LDS FamilySearch on-line 1880 census data base to
look for your ancestors? That is probably your best source. Look for
the individual by name, then click on the "Household" link. Then look
for German language newspapers for the area where they lived.

Several Zimmermans from Gerlingen settled in Westphalia, Iowa in
Shelby
County. My Great-great grandfather was one, Lorenz Zimmerman. There
are histories
on the IAShelby-L
page. I checked through my own information, but did not find that
name. I
haven't seen too many others from Gerlingen, as the ones I have
found all seemed
to settle in that area. Most accounts and deductions place the
family as
settling there approx. 1882 although most records I have found show
them leaving
Gerlingen in 1872. I have always wondered if they had lived
somewhere else
before settling in Iowa. I have also seen the lists with many
Zimmermans in
Illinois.
