My understanding is that "Zimmerman" is the German translation for a (wood)
"carpenter". I think that is a pretty common surname in German speaking
countries, not necessarily linked to a religion, but to their ancestral trade. About half
of my Zimmerman ancestors actually changed their last name to Carpenter when they come to
America. It might help you to watch for translated surnames from Germany in your
research.
Also the German surname "Drescher" was sometimes translated to
"Thrasher", another direct translation of the trade of Thrashing.

Also check and see when and where your family came into the US at. I know one imagration
of Zimmerman's came into the colonies in 1717 and landed in Virginia, in 1764 another
group of Zimmerman's came into the colonies at Charles Town SC (now Chalreston SC)
then there were a couple later imagration in the later 1800's that came in through NY
(these include the families of Bob Dylan (Robert Zimmerman) and even Ethel Merman (Ethel
Zimmerman) if you can find when and where they came in at you should be able to trace down
imagration records and that might include the information you are searching for. I do
know that in 1764 a Fredrick Zimmermann did land in Charles Town SC and settled in what
was then Old 96th District. He was with a group of German Palatines that were given land
grants from the King of England.
