Dear Rita,
I have done considerable research into Zimmermans and Carpenters in North
Carolina. May I suggest some research options for you:
1. I strongly suspect that your John Zimmerman is NOT related to the
Zimmermans/Carpenters of Lincoln, Gaston, Cleveland, and Rutherford County,
NC. That is my line and even though they were orginally Zimmerman, I have
not found any descendants to maintain the Zimmerman surname. They all
changed to Carpenter.
2. A strong possibility would be the "Moravian" Christian Zimmerman family.
He lived near Salem, was enumerated in the 1790 Rowan Co census, and died
leaving a number of heirs. Most of his family retained the Zimmerman
surname. Two grandsons, David and Samuel, moved into Lincoln County and
later Samuel moved west, I think to Indiana. Many of Christian's
descendants are located in Stokes, Surry, Forsyth, Davie and surrounding
counties.
3. Another possibility would be for your John to be a descendant of Michael
Zimmerman. Michael resided near the boundary between Lincoln (now Catawba)
and Burke County, NC and died prior to Nov 19, 1825 leaving a number of
children including a son, named John. A Lincoln County deed disposes of
some of his land in 1825 where a list of his children may be surmised. Many
of his children retained the Zimmerman name.
4. Another less likely candidate would be Matthias Zimmerman of the NC
mountains. In 1790 he was in Surry County but later died in present Yancey
County. Most if not all of this family changed to Carpenter. Descendants
did spread throughout the NC mountains and westward.
5. Finally your John may belong to a separate family not originally from
NC. Was he born in NC? Quite a number of Zimmermans resided in
Pennsylvania and a large family resided in upper Virginia (the Germana
colony), some of whom retained the Zimmerman name. I do not see that you
indicated where your John was born. That is vitally important in narrowing
your search.
Good luck! If I may be of further assistance, do not hesitate to contact
me.
Robert Carpenter

Subject: [ZIMMERMAN] John Zimmerman
Resided in Caldwell County NC in 1850 with wife Easter and
children Polly, Peggy, Stanhope, Henderson, Newland, Sidney,
George and Nathan. By 1860 the family was in Cherokee NC,
although Polly, Peggy and Stanhope are no longer listed, but
there are two new names: Margaret 23 (could this be Peggy?) and
Mary 1. In 1870, Margaret, Nathan and Mary are listed with
John and Easter. George and Sidney are listed as heads of
household with their own families not too far from John and
Easter in Cherokee County NC. John dies in May 1880 and appears
on the 1880 mortality schedule. Easter is enumerated with
Nathan's family in the 1880 census. Sidney and his family live
next door. According to their service records, Sidney, George
and Nathan survived the Civil War; however, the other 3 boys
(Stanhope, Henderson and Newland) did not.
I am looking for other descendants of this family as well as
John's and Easter's parents. Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks.
Rita
