Hi,I'm not sure if this is of any help, but I have ZIMMERMAN ancestors from
neighboring Botetourt County, VA that include a Sarah Zimmerman (1825-1910). She was 1 of
7 children to George W. Zimmerman and Mildred Henry Zimmerman.
The guess that Zimmerman is of German origin is a good one. "Zimmerman" is the
German translation for "Carpenter" (woodworker). Part of my Zimmerman line
actually changed their surname to Carpenter when they came to Virginia from Salzburg,
Germany in the early 1700s.
Hope this helps.David Wileytracingmyroots(a)yahoo.com

My thoughts would be that there is only one Sarah, that the date of 1778 is a mistake or
someone's guess, that there is no reason to identify the Mathias Zimmerman of Bedford
Co. with the Jan Jacob birth record, and that the Zimmerman's were German. What other
children did Mathias and Salomah have? What is the "Union Co. bio" you have for
Mathias? Jacob Rhoads and Sara Zimmerman are one set of my gg grandparents. I can be
emailed at rhileman(a)aol.com.
