I don't know of any Zimmermans in our family so far. You might try using MIGENWEB or going through the USGENWEB site. They have soundex you can use for the 1880 and 1900 census I believe.
If you are near a University you can sometimes look up the Soundes code for a surname then pull up the state and find out what county they lived in. It's a somewhat tedious process looking through census reports, but you can get loads of info from them.
I would really like to know how my Dad fits in with the Zimmerman family. P-l-e-e-a-s-e let me know.
Talk to you later,
Janet Merchant

I read your posting on the Zimmerman board and would be interested in knowing if any of my Zimmermans from Pennsylvania can be traced farther back than Jonathan. Do you have a Jonathan Zimmerman anywhere in your line?
Thanks

I think this is the father to Daniel Zimmerman. (Col. William F.Zimmerman). He got the rank of Col. while serving in the Virginia Continental Line in the Revolutionary War. He was a friend and neigbor to Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox" and George Washington. . He died in 1815 in Darlington.

During a geneology class my sister found our father, Everett Swartout listed in Ancestry under the Zimmerman family tree. As there are several mistakes in his listing please contact me and I will give you the correct info.
Also, would you please let me know the connection he has with the Zimmerman family. We know that our grandfather disappeared when my father was about 3 years old and remarried at least once before passing away. My father and mother tried for many years to find him, but with no luck.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Janet (Swartout) Merchant

I have researched my family back 8 generations. The final one I found was Joseph Zimmerman born about 1750 in PA. He married a Elizabeth Jones and had 5 sons and possibly 2 daughters. They then moved to Ohio and then on to Indiana where Joseph died in 1837.
I want to know what country they orginated from. Can anyone help?
Thank you,

I have 2 Joseph Zimmerman's in my family tree, but are from the Ohio and Indiana area. Joesph had a son named Oliver who had a son named John. Joesph also had a son named Joseph. My Joseph Zimmerman was born in 1752 in PA. The other was born in Ohio.
Same names, but not sure if any of this matches yours. Could yours be from PA?

Most likely Germany. You need to try searching in Pennsylvania. One book
that is a good resource is "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" by Ralph B.
Strassburger and edited by William J. Hinke, 3 vols. (1934; reprint of
volumes 1 and 3, Baltimore: Genealogical Pub. Co., 1980), covers arrivals at
Philadelphia of thousands of Palatines and others, 1727-1808.
