I received a notice in the mail a few years ago that I was the oldest living male decendent of Isacc and Huldah Zimmerman of Wood County, Ohio. They had to be moved from a crumbling mausoleum to graves.I have not yet researched this in depth but if you want the info I have I would be more than willing to send it. Just seems kinda odd that two woods are searching Zimmerman.

Hi Sarah,
I don't know where exactly my maternal grandfather (Royale Zimmerman) was from. I don't even know whether he and his sister and brother were born in the U.S. or immigrated here in the 1880s(?) 1890s(?).
What little I know is this: My aunt (his daughter who's now in her 80s) said he told her he grew up in an orphange in up-state New York. He claimed that his mother was decended from royalty in Belguim(?) Switzerland(?) or maybe France. (Jeez, did Belguim even exist back in the 1880s??? ) :o)
No one knows the particulars of "why" he and his siblings were put in an orphange, one theory is that their mother was an unmarried woman who'd had an affair with her married employer back in Europe, another theory is that she simply got sick and couldn't take care of her kids.
Other things my aunt has said about him was that he was a natural musician and artist. She said there wasn't an instrument he couldn't play and was very much in demand in the churches and lumberjack saloons in Canada, in the 1920s, for his "fiddle playing." She also said she and my mother would "dare" him to sketch this animal or that sunset and that he could draw with a charcoal pencil "like Rembrandt."
He must have been quite an interesting and resourceful little man as he was mainly a sharecropper and fur trapper. He moved to Canada in the 1920s because, at the time, they were paying $100 per grizzly bear trapped versus only $50 in nothern Minnesota and North Dakota. (Apparently grizzlies were a big problem for farmers back then.) One of the only photos we used to have of him, was a small B&W of him holding up a bear trap that was nearly 5 feet long.
My aunt has always said, "he went crazy, they (the authorities) found him living in a chicken coop on some abandoned farm and they took him to an asylum" in either northern Illinois or up-state New York and that he died in the asylum. This is interesting because my mother (his other daughter) was border-line manic/depressive all her life.
The only other thing that really sticks out about him, was that during the brief time he was raising my aunt and my mother -- it was the "Roaring Twenties" and they were drifting thru some very "hard drinkin'/hard fighting" towns -- and she said he never touched a drop, not even wine.
If you're still interested, I can try and get a friend who has a scanner, to scan in the only photo my family still has of him. It was taken when my Aunt was 5 and my mother was about 3 1/2.

Oh geez,
I have been searching for so long on this family, that notification of your post was very shocking. I guess I was resolved that this end of my family was going to be a long mystery. Thank you, Thank you for writing.
I am assuming that I belong to the white Zimmermans, since there is no physical evidence of any thing other than that. But for that matter, I was not aware that there was a "black" Zimmerman family. Do you have more information about this? I'm asking because my uncle, Gene (son of Will Henry, my grandfather - son of Frank) used to tell my mother when they were children that they were "Pennsylvania Dutch", or "Black Dutch". Again, not that there is any physical evidence of being anything other than white. I've seen photos of my grandfather, Will, and he is dark-skinned, but not "black".
Anyway, on to the Frank that you mentioned. The time is very close to the birth date of my Grandfather, Will Henry (Comeback is his next name, my mother swears it is a "given" name - Will Henry Comeback Zimmerman). He would have been born May 16, 1892. We know of one known brother, we don't know who were others siblings. My mother never knew any of them. The one she does know is a Corb (Corbett??) who married an Elizabeth.
My Will H. Zimmerman worked for the Ohio State Highway Dept. in Pike County. I have a scanned photo of the staff in 1948, and he is not in it. He also was a carriage jockey for a short time in the fair circuit in Pike County.
Since I've been collecting ANY info that I can find, because I don't know who is who in this lineage, I came across a posting somewhere, mentioning that there were photos to be had of 3 Zimmermans, who served in the Civil War, but were from Pennsylvania. I sent to the US Army Military History Institute to get scanned photos, which I have and can scan for you and email them if you are interested. If I ever find that they are actual relatives, I can send away to get actual copies of the photos. For now, the scanned images will do.
Anyway, these photos are two photos of a Corp Frank Zimmerman, one younger in uniform, one an older man in regular clothes. They look alike, except for the age, so I am assuming that they are one and the same person. Also, they are both listed as the same 'regiment'. They are listed as being in Company 'E', 55th Regiment, Pennsylvania Voluntary Infantry. The other photo is of a 1st LT. Chrisitian S. Zimmerman, Company 'I', 149th Regiment, Pa. Vol. Inf. This is of a younger man in uniform, but not the same uniform as Frank Zimmerman wore, at least as far as I can tell. Frank Z. has a short, 'scrunched' hat on, and the photo of Christian has a more 'western' looking hat. I know nothing about the Civil War uniforms, I guess it could be a rank distinction.
I also have a barely legible (partial??) scan of the Scioto Township Census of 1900, which lists 2 Zimmerman heads of family. From what I can see, there is a "Frank" (white) Born September 1874, showing place of birth as Indiana", but birthplaces of parents as Ohio. It says he was marrried at the time of the census (wife not listed), lists him as a Farmer/Laborer, and says he could not read and write.
The other Zimmerman on this census was a "Caroline", born in March 1850, with 4 children. Birthplace of herself and parents listed as Ohio, she was a housekeeper, and could read and write.
The only other thing that I have, is a scanned photo of a Henrietta Peters Zimmerman. I know nothing about her, except that my Will had first married to a Marena Peters, so I grabbed the photo while I could. I don't know of any connections. Again, if interested, I can send the photo to you by email.
That is all I have, admitedly, I am unsure if any of that information will ever prove to be valuable, I just collected it while I could, because one never knows.
But, I am very interested in any information that you are able to come up with. Ask your step-father if he knows of a Corb and Liz Zimmerman. I think that 'aunt Liz' is still living in that same old house in Pike County. Supposedly, my Frank was a farmer, and had ALOT of land. My grandfather, Will wanted no part of farming, and we think that much of my Frank's land was given to Corb, which he farmed till he died. They had many children, some of whom died young.
I am very curious as to what names they are able to uncover at the Zimm family plot that you mentioned.
I am keeping my fingers crossed for a link here. Any possibility of getting some photos of those civil war medals that you step-father has? I'd be very interested in seeing them.
I hope you stay in touch. Feel free to email me if you want to communicate directly. LindaRideout(a)hotmail.com
Thanks again!

Dear Carla,
Stay tuned for important information regarding an amazing find in Pike County, Ohio. An old Zimmerman family cemetery dating back to the 1800s! We will look for Sallie Zimmerman in the old cemetery near the Atomic Plant south of Piketon. Here is a copy of the message I posted for Linda earlier:
Are you related to the black or white Zimmermans of Pike County? If you are related to the white Zimmermans I may have had an unbelievable stroke of luck relating to your quest for Frank Zimmerman and the Zimmermans of Pike County, OH. My stepfather's mother was a Zimmerman from Piketon. Her maiden name was Hazel Matilda Zimmerman born about 1901 and died about 1989. Her father's name was Thomas Zimmerman and he was born in the 1870s. Thomas Zimmerman is buried next to his wife in the Piketon Cemetery. But here is where it gets really interesting. Thomas Zimmerman's father was named William Zimmerman and he was a Civil War Veteran probably born around 1840. His war medals had been passed down from generation to generation through the family and my stepfather is now in possession of them. Unbelievably, we had his war medals, but had no idea of where he was buried, until a few days ago! My stepfather was visiting relatives in Piketon just a few days ago and ran into his last s!
urviving great aunt whose maiden name was Leoni Zimmerman and who is about 90 years old. He began to tell her about the war medals and mentioned William Zimmerman. She told him "Oh him! He was my grandfather and died before I was born. I know the land he is buried on near the Atomic Plant south of Piketon." They went to the old Zimmerman family plot which is small and covered with weeds. The graves are all sunken in from the old wooden coffins collapsing and the tombstones are nearly unreadable and covered with mold and worn very badly. He managed to find William Zimmerman's tombstone with the Civil War veteran mark on the stone (we never even knew his middle initial was B. until the tombstone was found). They are going back to clean the tombstones off next Wednesday and I will post again with the results of what they find on the stones. I have a feeling that if you are related to the white Zimmermans, your great-grandfather Frank Zimmerman may be William Zimmerman's son and!
Thomas Zimmerman's brother and may be buried in this small family cemetary. We'll keep our fingers crossed!

Looking for descendants of Mary Zimmerman who married George Reinemer in MO. They had one daughter, Mary and seven sons; George C., William M., Charles C., Henry, John Franklin, Gustave H. and Christian. Gustave's line I know about 'cause that's mine. Christian, I think, was named for his grandfather, Christian Franklin.

My (now deceased) mother was born to Ella (McHenry) Nelson and Royale Zimmerman in southern Ontario, Canada in 1924. I am looking for info about my grandfather's gravesite. He was one of three children raised in an orphanage(?) in up-state New York in the 1890s(?) 1910s(?).
He had a sister, Ruth, who eventually settled in So. California and worked in the early motion picture industry. He had a brother (no name) who emigrated to Australia in the 1920s(?) and became a famous feather-weight(?) boxer.
My grandfather was possibly schizophrenic or manic/depressive and spent the last years of his life (1940s)? institutionalized in up-state New York, though, he may have died in southern Canada as he had a homestead there prior to the Depression.

Hi Joan
Not sure if we are related. My Zimmerman roots seem to come from Germany,
emigrating to Sulz Russia then to the US. Primarily North & South Dakota,
then to Saskatchewan Canada.

Searching for descendants of this couple. They are buried in Lebanon, Linn
Co. Oregon at the Odd Fellows (IOOF) Cemetery.
Samuel ZIMMERMAN, b. 10/17/1838, PA, d. 8/22/1921, Linn Co. Married
11/14/1868, Fulton Co. IL., to Hannah Jane JONES, b. 12/7/1852, IN., d.
4/17/1916, Linn Co.
I recently visited this Cemetery and found one headstone with both names.
They were listed as Mother & Father, therefore I know there are descendants
of this couple. Samuel was my g-g-uncle, the son of George & Mary Ann
(Cooper) Zimmerman.
I have very extensive records of my Zimmerman family and would like to find
more "cousins."
Joan
