Pattie,
It's great to hear from you. I'm hoping that this project will benefit any
and all ZIELINSKI researchers in finding family lost links and break through
their own brick walls.
My ZIELINSKI line comes from my maternal grandmother. The DNA sample is from
a cousin. My 2nd great grandparents were John ZIELINSKI and Gertrude
SMOLINSKY. They arrived from Germany/Poland and settled in Detroit, Michigan around
1889. They brought 5 children;
Frank (1876-1951)
Mary (1880-1953)
Veronica (1882-aft1953)
Paul (1887-1889)
Bernhardt (1888-aft1920)
Paul died shortly after they arrived. Mary married Louis Hackbarth and lived
in Wyandotte. The rest of the family lived in Detroit. Veronica married
Charles Krause and Charles Gehringer. Bernhardt lived with his parents and
disappears after the 1920 census. Frank, my great grandfather changed the spelling
of his name to SELINSKE and married Mary Brueske.
These people were the last of my ancestors to come to America.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to determine where they came from or where or
when,
exactly, they arrived. My grandmother always said they came from somewhere near
Berlin. Frank spoke German but his parents claimed in the 1910 and 1920
census that they spoke Polish.
I'm at the proverbial "brick wall." I know I have ZIELINSKI relatives out
there but don't know how to find them. The idea behind the DNA project to
collect samples from other ZIELINSKIs and find a match. If those ZIELINSKIs know
where they came from, I'll have a starting point for my search in Europe.
In the meantime, I hope that other ZIELINSKI researchers can use the DNA
samples in this project to find family connections of their own. The project is
only open to males with a ZIELINSKI surname variant, as the test only looks
at the Y-chromosome, passed from father to son.
Does your mother-in-law have any living male ZIELINSKI relatives? I'd love
to have them participate. Females can participate by finding male relatives
to test and by donating to purchase tests. The donations go directly to the
FamilyTreeDNA and are held for the purchase of test kits by the group
administrator (me). I never touch the money so it can't be diverted for other uses.
Thanks for asking,
Daniel Bellware
