Is there a ZIEGLER/ZEIGLER passenger list available from an individual
or group? We have traced ours back to FRITZ ZEIGLER and reached an
impasse. He, his family and other close relatives came over to SC
between 1730's and 1760's in a number of ships through different ports.
They all came from a little village, SEISTADT, SHONSTETTEN, or STEINHEIM
in the district of HEIDENHEIM in the GERMAN state of WURTTEMBERG. They
were probably farmers but possibly iron miners or smelters. To me, they
seemed to have a dedication to education which is a requirement of
people that wish to govern themselves.
About a year ago the president of the HEMPHILL HISTORICAL SOCIETY and I
went to Philadelphia searching for HEMPHILL passenger list. In so doing
I notice a number of ZIEGLERS from WURTTEMBERG with the same series of
given names as ours. There must be connections.
I have been enlightened by a couple of books on the history of this area
of Germany. This is where I got the idea that they were a people
dedicated to self education and improved communication. Some speaking
two or three languages. The history of the LUTHERAN CHURCH in SC states
it was surprising how few of the GERMAN LUTHERAN immigrants were
illiterate.
I am interested in the ZIEGLER/ZEIGLER passenger list and any history of
the WURTTEMBER area in 1680/1760. I would like to exchange information
on this. If you have anything on these and will share, please let me
hear from you.
