Hi LISTS: ORANGEBURGH_SC-L(a)rootsweb.com and ZIEGLER-L(a)rootsweb.com,
There are comments often on these two LISTS on the pronunciation of German
words and names. First may I say a few words on German/Swiss geography
which I am sure many of you know much more than I but some may not. Here
in SC we say we are German/Swiss as this is where our immigrants came from.
Some came from all parts of these countries but the vast majority of them
came from the old country of Swabia which consisted roughly of a
northeastern part of Switzerland and the present German states of
Wurttemberg and Baden. Even today they speak a different accent or German
language. If you learned German in an American College you may have
difficulty understanding the Swabians.
I found the following Web Sites that include a Swabian-English dictionary
and also a forum on the language. I hope some of you find this of interest.
