Hello all,
I am a fellow amateur genealogist with an interest in the Ziegler
name.
My Great Great Grandfather was Heinrich Christian ZIEGLER who was born
in the Prussian Province of Saxony, circa 1838/39. He arrived in
Australia from London in 1860.
His parents were Friedrich ZIEGLER and Rebecca VAN ETTEN (or VON
ETTEN).
Heinrich's other siblings were ARMEIDA. HERMINA, GEORGE, KARL (went to
Tonga) and FRANCESCA.
When Heinrich arrived in Australia, for some reason he named his
house, "Lorraine" and, apart from the documents which state his birth
in Prussian Province of Saxony, we have some family hearsay which says
the family has possibly connection to the region of Lorraine in
France.
Regarding the ZIEGLER name in France, There is one particular French
website which has info (in French) about the ZIEGLER's of ALSACE.
http://cdhf.telmat-net.fr/retour.fr.html
To find the article on that website, click on the links to "Bases des
Donnees" and then at the next page click on the link, "426 families".
This is a list of 426 surnames in the region. I'm sure this info
might be of interest to anyone researching the ZIEGLER name in the
Alsace/Lorraine region.
I have translated the article using the bi-directional translator at
http://babelfish.altavista.digital.com
However I won't post the translated version until i get the permission
of the author
To translate it, I cut and pasted the article bit by bit into the
translation site above. The result is a little confusing but I you
can get the gist of it.
The author of the original article is ANDRE GANTER.
