Hi,
I thought someone on the list might be interested in this article written in
This old house Magazine issued for Nov 1999 by JOrdan Reed
Johann Philip Ziegler,
Set on what was once squattered Land, know as the barrens of jericho. This
georgian style stucco covered sand stone farm house was completed in 1774 by
Johann Philip Ziegler,The son of a german immigrant.
Located 25 miles south of harrisburg,Pa. The 2500 square foot nine room l
shaped structure, was occupied until 1989. And has retained most of
it's,architectural integerity. All though the wood shingle roof has been
replaced by a standing seam metal one. Nearly all other regional features
remain, including wide pine floors and 8 fireplaces. Some of the bottom
sticks oversit, double hung windows need reglazing, but the wavy panes on the
second floor are unbroken and were likely mouth blowed in the 18th century.
The electrical and plumbing system are fairly intact. But there's only one
bathroom, and the kitchen is vintage 1960's. The house and the quarry it a
butts are now owned by The J.E.Baker Company. Which plans to mine, dolomite
on the land in the next year or so. They'll give the house away to anyone
who will pay to move it,no easy task considering that it's made of heavy
stone and that there is little available land in the city. Verling wolfe a
house mover, out of nearby bethel, estimates the job will cost between
$115000.00 and 12000.00.
Underneath the picture of the house: It states: The philip Ziegler house is
named for the builders father, who was granted the land on which it sits by
the Penn family in 1736.
