Hello ---
I am trying to find information on Nicholas Zeigler b: 1783 SC
the son of
Jacob Zeigler, Sr. (b: abt 1740 in Sohnstetten, Germany d: 1820
in
Orangeburg, SC).
Does any one know who his children were or anything about this
Nicholas
Zeigler?
Thanks -- Gin ginh(a)msn.com

Hi Gin,
First, let me plead "this is not my line". Last year at the
Zeigler Work
Table at the Oktoberfest I was the researcher on the Michael
Zeigler 1738
line (my wife's) and my friend Jack Zeigler was the researcher on
the Jacob
Zeigler, Sr., 1740 line (yours). Jack is traveling and I am not
sure when
he will be back. I will do what I can by quoting from a letter
Jack shared
with me:
THIS LETTER FROM JOSEPH E. STEADMAN, SR.
TO MR. ZEIGLER DATED 22 JULY 1971.
2. Jacob Zeigler was born in 1740 as indicated by his father's
petition *
* * died 1820. * * *
In the 1790 Census Jacob Zeigler is listed as a resident of
Orangeburg
District (North Part), SC. Evidently his sons Nicholas (with wife
and
children) and Jacob, Jr., then lived with him and his wife. His
near
neighbors were Andrew Sellers, John Sellers, and Andrew Hauser,
Sr.
The 1800Census is missing. In the 1810 Census Jacob Zeigler, Sr.,
is listed as a resident of Orangeburg County, SC. His wife and a
young female (10 to 16) then living with him. his near neighbors
were A. W. Sellers, ___ Hair, Andrew Zeigler, and George Zeigler.
He owned slaves 4 in 1790 and 23 in 1810.
The name of Jacob''s wife has not been learned. She was
living in
1810 probably about 65. They were the parents of at least 5 sons
and a number of daughters, the sons being Nicholas ca 1763,
Gottlieb ca 1765, Andrew ca 1767, John b. 1772, and Jacob, Jr.
b. 1774 and d. 11 Apr 1837 at 62.
I hope this will get you started. I have placed a copy of Mr.
Steadman's
Zeigler book in the Orange County Library. The original is in the
USC
Caroliniana Library in Columbia, SC. They also have information
on this
family in the Calhoun County Library and the Archives/Museum in
St.
Matthew's, SC.
Best regards and good hunting, Bob H. ___
