Mrs. Norma L. Ziegler

ZIEGLER
Norma L. Ziegler, age 69, died on Thursday, September 6, 2001 in San Antonio. She was born
on July 1, 1932, in O’Fallon, Illinois, to Raymond and Luella Lurtz. She married Ralph F.
Ziegler, DVM, on August 30, 1953. Norma accompanied Dr. Ziegler to various Air Force
assignments in the US until he retired after 28 ½ years as a Colonel. She received a
Bachelor of Science degree with Honors in Home Economics Education in 1954, and a Master
of Science degree in Child Development and Family Relationships in 1969, both from the
University of Illinois. Norma retired as a Professor, Child Development, San Antonio
College, after 22 years in 1998, and was awarded Emeritus status. As a retirement gift to
the College, she was the major benefactor to “Norma’s Nooks,” the renovated playgrounds at
the San Antonio College Child Development Center. She received several major awards,
including the Texas Association for the Education of Young Children Teache!
r Educator of the Year (1991) and National Institute for Staff and Organizational
Development Excellence Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to teaching and
learning (1998). Norma also co-authored two books, wrote a number of journal articles and
gave presentations at local, state and national conferences. Her sister preceded Norma in
death. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Ralph F. Ziegler, and her two sons,
David J. Ziegler of Bedford, Indiana, and Douglas P. Ziegler of Lake wood, Colorado; other
survivors include sisters, Kathryn Flowers of Glendale, Missouri, Delores Elliott of
O’Fallon, Illinois, Mildred Sims of Champaign, Illinois, Charlene Clark of Palmer,Alaska;
brother, Delbert Lurtz, Fairview Heights, Illinois and three grandchildren.
