COUNTY OF DOUGLAS, ILLINOIS, HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL – With an outline sketch of the
Northwest Territory and of the State of Illinois, Illustrated, Chicago, F. A. Battey &
Co., Publishers, 1884 (reprinted by Unigraphics, Evansville, Indiana, 1976.) Biographical
Sketches of Bowdre Township – pages 547 and 548.
“JOHN ZIEGLER, farmer, was born January 12, 1820, in Fairfield County, Ohio. His father’s
and grandfather’s names were also John. The latter came to the United States from Germany
in 1799, when father of subject was a boy. The year following, 1800, he settled at an
Indiana town in Fairfield County, Ohio, where the family continued to reside. Subject’s
father lived to his ninety-second year; his wife was Rebecca Conkle, of Harrisburg, Penn.
They were parents of nine children. Subject was the fourth child; he remained at home
until of age; attended German and English school, and secured a fair education. In
December, 1840, he married Caroline Hasler, a native of Hocking County, Ohio. They lived
on and conducted his father’s farm till 1847, when he came to Coles (now Douglas) county
and settled on land, entered by his father, where he now lives. The land was a waste
prairie and timber, had no improvement. He lived with a neighbor till the!
completion of a hewed-log house (then a fine residence) which stand intact on the farm.
He now has a well-improved farm or 162 acres, orchard, fine residence, large barn, etc.
His improvements have all been built by himself, he having profitably) worked at
carpenter’s trader several years after coming to Illinois, and built Simpson’s store room
in Hindsboro, the first building put up in the town. Personally he is highly esteemed by
the entire community, and is proverbial as a man of honor and principle. He is a staunch
Republican, and during the war was a member of the Union League; has been County
Commissioner three terms, and Township Treasurer. Mr. Zielger and wife are members of the
Christian Church. Their daughter is wife of A. J. Duffle, whose sketch is given. They are
also parents of Maria (now Daniels), Susan, Sarah and John, at home.”
