From Gin Hathaway ginh(a)msn.com
I have been working with Honey L. Dodge ( hslanham(a)blackfoot.net ) on the
Alabama Zeigler that migrated from SC to Autauga Co, AL and Coosa Co., AL
Below is our theory. We would greatly appreciate all comments.
Jacob and Catharine Zeigler migrated from SC to Autauga, AL and purchased
land there around 1817. Nicholas and (second wife) Mildred "Milly"
migrated from SC to Autauga Co. around 1820. Nicholas was on the first
Autauga Co. jury in 1820. Jacob and Nicholas Zeigler were possibly
brothers. Jacob died AL in 1830 and Nicholas died in AL in 1841.

MADALINA ZEIGLER also known as Nancy was born about 1800 and died after

who was born Jan 26, 1838.
SARAH (SALLEY) ZEIGLER was born 1805 in SC married LEWIS ZEIGLER, son of
"Nicholas Zeigler born about 1778." See Lewis Zeigler son of Nicholas

In the 1850 Coosa County Census Nicholas is shown as a single man. His
estate valued at $9,532.54 was divided among his at-law heirs as he left no
will. It is through the probate of his estate in Coosa County from 1858 to
1861 that so much is learned about Jacob and Catharine Zeigler's family.
MARIA/MARIAH ZEIGLER was born 1815 in SC and married ALBERT CRUMPLER. Based
on the 1850 AL Census their children were Albert born 1833, Catharine born

Nicholas Zeigler:
Nicholas Zeigler was born about 1778 in SC and died 11 Feb 1841 in Autauga
Co, AL. His parents and his first wife are unknown. She probably
lived and died in South Carolina. Nicholas and his first unknown wife had
four known children Catherine, William, Henry and Lewis. Nicholas and his
second wife was Mildred (Milly) ? had four children Louisa W., Edward
Jefferson, Caroline Dixon, and George Washington.
Catherine Zeigler, the eldest, was born 10 May 1797 in SC and died 3 June
1834 in Crawford Co, GA. She married William Dent of Sumter, SC. Their 4
known children are Jane, Polly Caroline, John Washington b: Mar 02, 1817
and Mary Jane b: Apr 04, 1824.
Nicholas' next child was William Zeigler born 15 Nov 1799 in Orangeburgh
District, SC and died 11 June in 1855 in Crawford Co,
GA. He owned three plantations and was buried in an elaborate gravesite at
Rosehill Cemetery in Macon, Bibb Co, GA. There is
also a monument there to his sister Catherine Zeigler Dent. There is no
record of a marriage for William but in his will of 1855 he
named 3 children by his slave Mary leaving them $100,000 as well as about
$80,000 to each of his 3 siblings or their heirs. He
conveniently named all his siblings and half-siblings in his extensive will.
Nicholas' son Henry was born in SC about 1802. He and his wife Nancy are
listed in the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Wetumpka, Autauga Co. Nancy
was probably a daughter of Jacob Zeigler, a neighbor and probably a
relative of Nicholas Zeigler. Henry and Nancy had one known child Henry b:
Jan 26, 1838.
Lewis was the youngest child of Nicholas' first marriage and was born about
1803 in SC. He and his wife Sarah and their children
lived in Wetumpka, and by 1856 they migrated to Jackson Parish, LA. His
wife Sarah was definitely a daughter of Jacob Zeigler. The nine children
of Lewis and Sarah are:
i. Caroline A. Zeigler b. Jun. 30, 1822, AL; d. Aug. 09, 1887, Jackson
Parish, LA; m. George Thomas Butler, Oct. 10, 1839, Autauga Co., AL.
ii. Dickson Zeigler
iii. Nicholas Louis Zeigler, b. Jun. 23, 1833, AL; d. Mar 31, 1908, Jackson
Parish, LA; m. Caroline A. ?.
iv. Francis Caroline Zeigler, b. June 14, 1840; m. John English Golson;
v. Sanders Zeigler, b. 1840 AL
vi. John H. Zeigler, b. 1841, AL
vii. Albert C. Zeigler, b. 1844, AL; d. Dec.. 12, 1872; m. Cynthia R.
McClendon, Apr.. 22, 1869.
viii. Mariah F. Zeigler, b. 1845, AL
ix. William Zeigler, b. 1852, AL
Nicholas Zeigler's second wife was Mildred known as Milley who was born
about 1805 in SC. They had 4 known children.
Their first child was Louisa W born in SC. She married William T Hall. Her
tombstone in the Hall Cemetery in Autauga Co
reads that she was born 20 Oct 1820 and died 18 Jul 1862.
Edward Jefferson Zeigler was born about 1822 in SC. He married Caroline C
Booth 4 Dec 1844 in Autauga Co, AL.
Daughter Caroline Zeigler was born about 1829 in AL and married Thomas H
Hall 28 Jul 1842 in Autauga Co, AL.
Son David George Washington Zeigler was born about 1838 in AL and died in
1861. He married Martha Davis 21 Mar 1857 in Autauga Co, AL.
On 4 February 1820 in Richland District, SC, Nicholas recorded five Deeds
of Gift to his five oldest children. He gave 2 slaves
to daughter Catherine Dent plus 1 slave to his granddaughter Polly C Dent.
He gave 6 slaves to Lewis, 10 to Louisa, 6 to Henry, and
2 to William. All the slaves except those given to Catherine and her
daughter Polly were to be held by Nicholas until his children
attained the age of 21.
Nicholas Zeigler served on the first jury ever summoned in Autauga Co on 12
April 1820. It is possible that his wife
Milley, his children Lewis, Henry, Louisa, and Edward arrived in Autauga Co
a bit later. Between 1827 and 1831, Nicholas purchased
400.15 acres of land in Autauga Co, AL from the US government in land patents.
In his will of 1840, Nicholas left his estate to his youngest 3 children
and wife Milley. They shared about 800 acres; 44
slaves; furniture, including a piano forte, books, and maps; plantation
equipment; livestock; food and crops. He noted that
his five older children had already received their share of his estate earlier.
Nicholas' widow Milley married Henry P David about 1842 in AL.
