Hi Brad,
Your southern friend from Orangeburg, SC, Bob. When ever I see
information on the original homeland of any of the Zeiglers like in
your email, a light or bell goes on. As we said before our two
Zeigler line are not closly related in this country but there is little
doubt their origin is the same. The information on your Michael
says his family origin was Switzerland but came to America in
1717 from Germany. Our Michael came to America from
Wurttemberg, Germany in 1753 and we have been unable to find
this family line's origin.
Brad if the books "Ziegler-Zeigler Ancestors", by Patricia Landis or
"Mennonite Encyclopedia" Vol. 4, p. 1026 ---ZIEGLER have any
informaation on the origin of this Zeigler family or mine I would be
glad to pay copying and mailing cost for the pertinent parts.. I
would assume I could purchase the smaller book if the supplier's
address is known.
The Mennonite bit is news to me. I should have known my wife
was a Mennonite. She is such a good cook.
Please let me hear from you and best regards,
Bob H. ___

Brad,
Does that book mention Jacob Zeigler who migrated from Germany in 1746 and
married Esther Buckwalter in 1775 in York County, PA?

Looking for ANYONE related to the following ZIEGLER family -
John George ZIEGLER (1810-1886) - born in Baden
His wife Juliana (maiden name unknown) (1813-1887) was born in PA
They had six children, that I know of (I believe all children born in PA):
1. John George Ziegler (b. unknown, died prior to 1888). Ten children
were mentioned in Juliana's (his mother) will (written May 20, 1887).
These 4 were mentioned when Julina's will was settled (May 25, 1888):
a.John George Ziegler
b. Edward Ziegler
c. Ge(?)t(?)y Ziegler
d. Bessie Ziegler
2. John Frederick Ziegler (1835-1891) - my GGgrandfather - married
Emma OUDINOT (1838-1922). I believe that all of their children were
born in PA:
a. George Henry (b. 1855-d. before 1943)
b. Emma Virginia (b. 1856-d. before 1943) married Elwood Showalter.
She ran a Showalter's shoe store in Reading in 1909.
c. Annie Laurasteen (b. 1859-1943) married James MATZ - my Ggrandmother
d. Julia Ellsworth "Julianna" (b. 1861-d. before 1909))
e. William Anthony (b. 1868-d. before 1943)
f. John Gerlach (b. 1868-d. before 1909)
g. Sarah (Sally ?) (d. after 1943) married ZIMMERMAN, lived in Egg
Harbor, NJ in 1943
h. Samuel (d. after 1943) I believe he had one son. Lived in
Philadelphia in 1943
i. Louisa (d. after 1943) married WENDEROTH, lived in Glenside
(northwest of Philadelphia) in 1943
j. Minnie (d. before 1909)
3. Charles Rudolph Ziegler (d. after 1888)
4. Henry Ziegler (b. 1846, d. after 1888)
5. William Leonard Ziegler (b. 1848, d. after 1888)
6. Juliana Ziegler (b. 1853, d. after 1888) intermarried to Winkler
NOTE: There is a strong Reading Railroad connection! John George
Ziegler was foreman "in the P. & R. flue department" for 30 years and
his son William held the same position as of Feb. 1, 1886 (the date
of John George's obituary). The 1870 Census lists John George Sr., Will
and Henry as "Loco. Mech. Journ.", John F. as "Loco. Mech." and John
F.'s son Henry as "App. to Loco. Mech.".

I have a copy of this book that I purchased in 1981 from Patricia Landis
for $6.50. Her address at that time was Box 65 Corkscrew Rd., Estero FL
33928. Don't know if she is still alive or if this address is still current.
The book is 36 pages in length and contains no photos. It contains a
multitude of references (histories, census, biographies, some short
genealogies, war information, etc) to anyone named Ziegler or Zeigler or
variations. I can look up things for you. I assume you are interested in
immigrant brothers, Michael and Melchior.
The book has several references to immigrant Michael Ziegler:
1) "Mennonite Encyclopedia" Vol. 4, p. 1026 ---ZIEGLER, a Mennonite
family of Swiss origin......Immigrant Michael Ziegler (c1680-c1765) was
born in Germany, migrated to America before 1717, settling in Perkiomen
Township, now Montgomery County, PA., and was affiliated as a minister
with the Skippack congregation. He was one of the subscribers to the
Dordrecht Confession of Faith in 1725....[followed by information about
his son Andrew]
MY NOTE: Michael is believed to have been born 1684. He did die in 1765.
2) "Early Eighteenth Century Palatine Emigration", p. 247 ---Michael
Ziegler embarked with the first party of Palatines, (5-3-1709)
3) "The Compendium of Amercian Genealogy" Vol. 3, p. 625 ---Michael
Ziegler (b. in Germany 1680, d. 1765 in Pa.) married Catherine ---, and
they had Andrew (1707-1797) who married Elizabeth Kolb and they had
Michael who married Miss Clemens (daughter of Jacob, granddaughter of
Gerhardt) MY NOTE: Some of these dates are questionable. Michael is
believed to have been born 1684 and Andrew born in 1711.
There are two references to Melchior Ziegler of Northampton/Lehigh County, PA:
1) Tax Lists from the "PA Archives", Northampton County, PA, Macungie Tp.
---1772 Melchor (sic) Ziegler, farmer
MY NOTE: Probably immigrant Melchior, but could perhaps be a son of his
by the same name.
2) "Naturalizations of Foreign Protestants in the American Colonies" at
the Philadelphia County Courthouse, p. 123, ---Melchior Ziegler of
Macungie Tp. Northampton County, PA (10-9-1765).
MY NOTE: Probably immigrant Melchior.
Blessings,
Brad Ziegler

Forgot that Monday is Columbus Day and the library is closed. We most
likely will be going the 18th and if not then well I don't know when. I am
getting ready for a trip to Salt Lake City for a week's vacation the end of
this month and if don't get there by the 18th then it will be after we get
home. Will check with you before I go to make sure you still want the info
and to let you know that we are going.
Sorry to make the mistake. Since we don't have kids in school anymore this
kind of holiday sort of slips by us now and then.
Bev
I wanted to know what it said about Melchior Zeigler, the immigrant,
brother to Michael. Thanks for the help.

Yes, it was me. Brad Zeigler and I were discussing it.
Do you know where I could get a copy? Is it in any libraries that you know
of. Thanks,

It is at the Los Angeles, Calif. Public Library. I was looking in their
online catalog for Pennsylvania Genealogy when I saw it. I don't know if
they do inter-library loans of genealogy books but I do know that they don't
send out genealogy books to the various branches of the Library. I asked
them when I was there last time and they said that the genealogy books stay
there. Is there anything in particular you are looking for in the book?
Perhaps I could see if it contains what you are looking for.
Was going to go there on Monday but I think that they are closed as it is
Colunbus Day. Will probably be going the Monday after that or sometime
soon.

Earlier today I read that someone wanted to know who the author of the book
"On the Trail of the Black Walnut". The author is George Elmore Reamon.
I hope it was on this list. If not then please excuse my mistake.
Bev
Does anyone on the list know where I can get the book
"Trail of the Black Walnut"? or this book:
"Ziegler-Zeigler Ancestors"
by Patricia Landis.
I got the book by Gertrude Ziegler of Zelienople PA, about the descendents
of Michael Ziegler through interlibrary loan, they have a copy at the New
Castle Public Library for anyone that would like to request it.
Thanks,

The earliest mention of Melchior I know of is 1749 (as a founder of
Ziegel Church in Lehigh County, PA) , but I SUSPECT that he may have
arrived as early as 1730 when the area was first settled. Many German
Reformed/Lutherans (of which Ziegel Church is) arrived after 1727.
Melchior was also described as a "pioneer" settler in this area. There is
also a spot in the county called "Ziegler's Knob", perhaps, named after
him or his family.

I don't know. This reference was listed in a book entitled
"Ziegler-Zeigler Ancestors"
by Patricia Landis. She did not list the author.
