Henry Elza Ziegenbein, 93, of Payette, a retired orchardist, passed away Wednesday March
11, 1998, at a Payette care center. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday,
March 16, at Riverside Cemetery, Payette, with Pastor Dick Shaw of the Caldwell First
Baptist Church officiating. Services are under the direction of Shaffer-Jensen Memory
Chapel, Payette.
Henry was born Aug. 9, 1904, at Royal, Neb., to Ernest and Alice Hanger Ziegenbein. He was
reared and educated in Nebraska. He married Beulah Carver at Yankton, SD on April 12,
1926. They moved to Hood River, OR, in 1927, and came to Idaho in 1935. He worked as an
orchardist until World War II, when he went to defense as a welder in the shipyards in
Seattle and Portland. Upon his return to this area, he worked at a local dairy for a short
time and purchased a home on 6th Street that was always open to family and friends.
In 1952, he returned to his beloved orchards, where he gained respect as a top orchardist
in Idaho and was consulted by fruit growers from the entire West region. He worked in
several orchards around the valley, until retiring from R. H. Shake and Sons, after many
years of dedication, in 1969. Henry was an avid sportsman; he loved to camp, fish and
hunt, as well as tend to his large gardens that were known by many.
He was respected for his honesty and integrity and was a mentor to many. He was a loving
husband to his wife of 71 years, a wonderful father, dearly loved grandfather,
great-grandfather, great-great grandfather and uncle. He will be truly missed by his
entire family.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah of Payette; two daughters, Ramona Malone of McCall and
June Knapp of Fruitland; a son, Bill Ziegenbein of Caldwell; seven grandchildren; 15
great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; six brothers, Lester of Hood River,
Ore., Garen of Isleton, Calif.; Clinton and Charles of Twin Falls; Raymond of Sherwood,
Ark., and Lloyd of Shreveport, LA; and one sister, Marie Rothleutner of Payette.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Ethel and Zada; three brothers,
Edgar, Bob and Stanley; one son, Eugene, one grandson and three great-grandchildren.
