Philip died of a gunshot wound to the head--one account states that he was shot by a
sniper while he filled his canteen. On May 19, 1865, near Alexandria, VA, Capt.
J.W.Hoffman, 3rd Div.., 9th AC responds to a letter from Mary dated May 17, 1865 saying
that Philip died like a true soldier, at his post and facing the fire.
Philip's exact date and place of death are not known...nor is his burial place. It is
known that he died during one of the battles of Petersburg and was buried with many other
soldiers in unmarked graves....their fellow soldiers in retreat, and unable to retrieve
the dead and wounded.
