Charles Burley Zerbe
July 9, 1923 - May 1, 2011
Charles Burley Zerbe, 87, Tyrone, loving father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed
away Sunday morning at Tyrone Hospital.
He was born in Tyrone, son of Charles F. and Matilda (Burley) Zerbe. He married Adelaide
Hoy on June 5, 1949, and she preceded him in death on May 23, 2005.
Surviving are a daughter, Barbara A. Oravetz of Wyomissing; two sons: John M. and wife,
Linda, of Corry and Thomas J. of Tyrone; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a
brother, James (Margie) of Harrisburg; a nephew, Chuck (Barbara) of Hershey; and his loyal
companion of four years, Lois Cassidy.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Farran, in April 2005.
Burley was a 1941 graduate of Tyrone High School. After graduation, he proudly served for
more than four years as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. He was
employed as a type-set printer until his retirement.
Burley was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, serving in various capacities
throughout the years. He was a charter member and longtime member of the board of
directors of the Tyrone Area Historical Society, where his vast knowledge of the history
of Tyrone was invaluable to the historical society and the community in general. He had
also been a board member of the Tyrone-Snyder Public Library and was a member of Tyrone
Lodge 494, F&AM, Burley was a well-known and friendly face around the community, where
he enjoyed a multitude of friends. He was a wonderful husband, father and friend, and life
will not be quite the same without him.
Friends will be received from 1 to the 3 p.m. funeral service Saturday, May 7, 2011, at
Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone, Pastor Mark Liller officiating. Interment
will be made in Oak Grove Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Tyrone Hospital, Tyrone Area Historical
Society or Tyrone-Snyder Public Library.
