Hi Lindsay,
The branch of the family that I am interested in changed their name from Zemansky (or
Zamansky or Zeamansky, depending upon the census) to Zeman sometime in the 1880s.? Abraham
Zemansky, the New York physician, retained the Zemansky name as did his children.? One of
Abraham's brothers, Samuel, moved to Sherman, Texas and some other members of the
extended Zemansky family settled in or near San Francisco.?? There are numerous references
to Harry Zemansky (sorry, I may have his first name wrong and I am not near my records in
order to check) as a registrar of voters, etc., in various San Francisco and California
newpapers.
As far as I can tell, the Zemans that I am looking for have died out.? Solomon and Alvina
Zeman had at least four children, Isaac, Ida, Frances and Bertha.? Bertha had, as far as I
know, one daughter, Alvina Ling.? After what I presume was the divorce of her parents she
took her mother's maiden name of Zeman.? I have been unable to find children of Isaac
and Ida and Frances never married, again as far as I know.? My interest is in Uncle Sol,
as he was always referred to, and his parents.? Uncle Sol was born in Poland and came to
the US as a very young child.
I doubt that our Zemans share anything other than a name, but you never can tell.
Best wishes,? Barbara?

Subject: [ZEMAN] California Zemans
Hi Barbara,
I really don't know if Zeman was the original name. I only know that
the family used Zeman for censuses. They could have changed their names
when they immigrated. Abraham and Annie's family were one of the few Zemans
(at least spelled that way) in California. I used Ancestry's census by
location to find them. I will ask my other family members if they know what
Abraham's occupency was. Doesn't "-sky" mean family? It is very
possible
they just shortened their name. I'll search for Abraham's family info.
