The Pension papers regarding Daniel and Catherine are important to the Benjamin Zeluff and
Mary Polly Ward line also because in the papers for the pension request, Mary Ward
testified as follows:
State of New Jersey
Passaic County
Be it remembered that on this 24th day of October AD 1837, before me appeared Abraham
Reynolds, a judge of the Inferior Court of Common Pleas, in and for said county,
personally appeared Mary Zeluff, widow of Benjamin Zeluff deceased, aged Seventy Eight
years, a resident of the Township of Springfield in the County of Essex and state
aforesaid, who being duly sworn according to law on her oath saying that she is personally
acquainted with Catherine Zeluff now applying for a pension, knows her to be the widow of
Daniel Zeluff, deceased, from her personal knowledge. She knows that the said Catherine
and Daniel Zeluff were lawfully married in the spring of the year 1779, that she was
present at the marriage, but cannot particularize the month, that they continued as man
and wife from the time of their marriage until the death of said Daniel Zeluff, that the
said Daniel Zeluff died on the 29th day of April AD 1828, and she knows the said Catherine
Zeluff has remained a widow !
ever since that time. That she has a distinct recollection of the said Daniel Zeluff
performing several tours of military duty in the service of the United States during the
War of the Revolution but from the length of time, old age and the consequent loss of
memory, she cannot particularize as to date or length of service.
Sworn to and subscribed before
me at Paterson the day and year
first above written. Mary"X" Zeluff
Mark
