I have:
George McGibney5 Zeliff, born 28 Jun 1883 in Hartsville, Steuben, New York; died 1959 in
Batavia, Steuben, New York; buried in Hartsville, Steuben, New York. Listed as a child,
with birth date, of Peter Zeliff in his pension records, dated December 17, 1898,
Certificate #260.709, of the 141 Regiment, NY Volunteer Infantry. Further information
provided by granddaughter Denise Zeliff in Feb. 2001, noting his marriage to Olive Spear
and death in Batavia. George is buried along side his parents in the Hartsville Center
Cemetery, located in Hartsville, New York.
The above George is the son of:
. Peter4 Zeliff (Joseph3, Solomon2, Daniel (Ceilo) (Silof)1), born 25 Sep 1821 in Mahanoy
Twp., Northumberland, Pennsylvania; died 9 Jun 1906 in Canisteo, Steuben, New York; buried
in Hartsville, Steuben, New York. He married on 2 Aug 1862 in Hornellsville, , New York
Lois J. Cooper, born 1846 in , , Pennsylvania; died 1912 in Canisteo, Steuben, New York;
buried in Hartsville, Steuben, New York.
Notes for Peter Zeliff
Documentation supplied by great granddaughter Denise Zeliff in Feb., 2001, included the
following: A death certificate on Peter which named his parents as Joseph Zeliff and Mary
Ann, and idicated that he died of paralysis and "old age" on June 9th 1906.
Information on the death certificate was signed as "true" by Peter's widow.
She signed her name as "Mrs. Peter Zeliff". Other documentation were military
recruitment papers and rank as a private in the 141st NY Vol. during the Civil War, noting
the town in which he "signed up" for the army was Alfred, Alleghany county, NY,
on September 24th, 1864. Further evidence notes that Peter was mustered in on October 6,
1864 in Elmira, NY, and honorably discharged on June 8th, 1865. He applied for a pension
(#260.709) on December 17th, 1898, wherein he needed to provide his wife's name (and
maiden name), a marriage date, and the names of their children, along with their birth
dates. This compiler has guesstimated that Peter was born i!
n Little Mahanoy Twp., Northumberland county, PA, as that was the residence of his
parents in the 1820 US PA census records, just one year before his birth. Descendant
G-granddaughter Denise Zeliff indicated in the information she supplied to me that Peter
was a prunner and tree grafter. His Volunteer Enlistment papers note that he was also a
farmer. He appears in the US NY census records for 1880, residing with his wife Lois, and
daughters Silvia, Sarah, Cora, and son Edwin. Peter is buried in the Hartsville Center
Cemetery, in Lot #1, located in Hartsville, New York. The cemetery has a death listing of
June 28, 1906, which is different than his death certificate.
Notes for Lois J. Cooper
Information supplied by G-granddaughter Denise Zeliff in 2001. Lois is indicated as the
w/o Peter Zeliff in his military pension records, and her name as "Mrs. Peter
Zeliff" is written on his Death Certificate.
