Dear Zeisler researchers,
Following are emails from Jessica & Nancy that I don't believe know each
other? But have common Zeislers. I'm not the Zeisler Rootsweb
Administrator, but need to put a plug in for everyone being sure to join
the Zeisler Rootsweb Mail list. This can only be done from your computer
OR by asking the administrator to do it for you. The mail list really
helps facilitate the sharing of this type information.

Hello Jessica & Nancy,
I believe you are both talking about the same Zeisler (Henry John). You
may want to contact each other and compare/share ? Nancy's email follows:

Hi Roy,
Thank you for your email and request for information about our ZEISLER
history! I have recently been in contact with Tom Altpeter regarding our
particular ZEISLER ancestry and he has made me aware of your efforts to
establish a ZEISLER listserve. We both think it is important to participate
and appreciate your time and efforts with the website.
What I know of our line comes from several family members ... passed down
and around from one person to the next. I'm not sure what is true and what
is embellished, but combined with documents I have been able to locate, here
goes ..
Peter ZEISLER was born in Austria (my guesstimate: 1855) and had at least
one brother. They both immigrated to the America and both served in the
Civil War .. unknown whether they served for the north or south. Tale has it
that Peter's brother married Fanny Bloomfield, the concert pianist. I have
not researched this other than to note that lawyer, Sigmund Zeisler
(Jewish), married Fanny (also Jewish) and they lived in Chicago, IL until
they died. Also learned that both came from Austria.
While Peter ZEISLER served in the war, he met Rosanna KANE (born 1853) who
immigrated from the Isle of Wight, Scotland. She worked as a governess
(North/South Carolina) at that time. Rosanna (Anna) was Catholic and Peter
is said to have been Protestant (though I have a theory that he may have
been 'born' Jewish). They married and lived their lives in NYC .. raised two
children
Peter Zeisler (born ?)
Henry J. Zeisler (born 1874)
Rosanna KANE Zeisler died 14 March 1901, NYC, at 48 years of age and is
buried in Old Calvary Cemetery. Her death record shows she was a widow so
Peter died prior to her 1901 passing. Tale has it that Peter was not buried
in Old Calvary because you 'had to be Catholic' and he was not. I have not
located Peter ZEISLER's grave yet.
Peter ZEISLER (the junior) is said to have had red hair. At some point, he
changed his surname to something that sounds like 'sisler', became a
baseball player, playing under the name, "Red" Sisler (again .. I'm not
sure
of the surname spelling!) He lived in Brooklyn. That's all I know about
Peter.
Henry J. ZEISLER (son) was born about 1874 and met his Irish lass, Catherine
(Katie) FLANAGAN, and married in NYC on 10 November 1901. Catherine (Katie
as she was known) was one of five surviving out of seven (in total)
children, which included: William, Edward, Frances, Estella .. born to
parents Edward FLANAGAN (immigrant from Ireland & a longshoreman) and
Margaret LARKIN in NYC. I have more on FLANAGAN history should anyone be
interested in that line.
As a young man .. Henry J. ZEISLER wanted to be an opera singer, but faced
with having to earn a living to raise he & Catherine's brood of nine
children, he worked among other things as a singing bartender and a
paper-hanger. Names of children (and their married surnames) born to Henry &
Catherine:
Margaret (Margie Irwin)
Anna (Nancy Kilby)
Frances (Fran Ralston)
Henry (Hank Zeisler Jr.)
Dorothy (Dorothy Joys)
Estelle (Stella Thomas .. later Stella DeVito)
Katherine (Kay Altpeter)
Edna (died as a young child)
Robert William (Billie Zeisler)
All were brought up Catholic. My great-aunt Fran ZEISLER Ralston often
related to me (before she died in 2000) that she had always been told she
was named after her father's relative, Fanny Bloomfield Zeisler, the
pianist. Of the siblings, Bill Zeisler is the only one still living (in
Michigan).
Both Henry J. ZEISLER and wife, Catherine (Katie) FLANAGAN, are buried in
Old Calvary in Queens in the 'same grave' with Henry's mother (Rosanna KANE
Zeisler) and six other KANE relatives! Henry J. ZEISLER died 14 February
1933 and Catherine died 26 May 1960.
Hope this provides enough information. Its probably more than you wanted to
know, but I felt it might be useful somehow.
