"ZEIGLER"
The surname Zeigler appears to be occupational in origin, and is believed
to be associated with the Germans, meaning, "one who built with or made
brick or roof tile". Different spellings of the original surname are a
common occurrence. Dictionaries of surnames indicate probable spellings
variations of Zeigler to be Seakler, Seigeler, Zeagler, Zeaglar, Zeikler,
Ziegler and Zigler.
The origin of our Zeigler's seem to have began around Augsburg, Germany:
A city in the State of Bavaria, Germany situated at the confluence of the
Wertach and the Lech Rivers; about forty miles n. w. of Munich. Augsburg
was founded by the Romans in 15 b. c., the Franks conquered it in 536 a.
d., and in 1276 it became a free city of the Holy Roman Empire. The
Religious Peace settling the quarrels between Catholics and Protestants
was concluded there in 1555.
In the 14th century one line of the Zeigler Family settled in the State
of Saxony, being feudal companions and freeholders of lands among the
Nobility. One of its members, in the 16th century, acquired the Community
of Gross Rohrsdorf and there built the castle of Klipphausen. The
Descendants of this settler was later referred to by the surname of both
Zeigler and Klipphausen, and belonged to the Patrician Society of the
City of Dresden.
Out of this locale is the most likely place of our Ancestry; to-wit:
The most knowledgeable information this writer can piece together
indicates that the Father of the Immigrant Zeigler's was named Fredrick
Faitz Zeigler. No record is found of Fredrick, this information was
passed down by word of mouth by elderly Family Members and cannot be
verified. It has often been repeated that Fredrick came to America
bringing along five Sons, supposedly named John, Jacob. Israel, Michael
and Peter. This also has not been verified, but pressure has been brought
on me to publish the information I do have verified, consequently, I am
including the above information also.
Michael Zeigler is the only member of this group that I will persue.
Michael Zeigler Sr. is shown on the 2nd Census of the U.S. 1800,
Orangeburg District, S. C., living on the south side of the Edisto River,
being in the Orangeburg District this would put him between the North and
South Edisto Rivers.
Michael's household consisted of two males up to ten years old, one male
ten to sixteen, one male sixteen to twenty six and one male above forty
five, also two females up to ten years old, two females ten to sixteen,
one female sixteen to twenty-six, and one female twenty-six to
forty-five.
Michael Zeigler Jr. and John Zeigler both sons of Michael Zeigler Sr. are
also listed in the same enumeration. Michael Zeigler Jr. had a Family of
five including himself, while John's Family totaled three persons.
