I am searching for information on 2 Clayton Zieglers. The first was the
brother of my greatgrandfather Albert Henry Ziegler. His name was Clayton
Daniel Ziegler. He was born in So. Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, PA on
9/20/1851. He married Esther Seaman about 1877-1878 and they had 4 children
George Henry, Lillie, Edward and Katie. Following the death of Esther in
1892, he married Emmaline Shoemaker. Clayton lived in Boyertown, PA and was
a wagon painter.
The second Clayton is Clayton Elmer Ziegler who was the first child of
Albert Henry and his wife Amelia. He was born 8/25/1878 in Adamsburg, Snyder
County, PA. He married Jenny Roth and they had 3 children Raymond, Clarence
and Albert. Clayton lived in Catasauqua, Lehigh County, PA and was owner of
the Acme Beef Company from around 1910 to sometime in the 1920s. I do not
know when Clayton or Jenny died but my uncle remembers them coming to visit
them up into the 1950s.
Note that I have found times (especially between the 1880s and 1920s) when
the family used the Zeigler spelling on certain documents such as marriage
licenses, city directories, etc. The story as told to me by my dad was that
his grandfather (Albert H.) lived in the same town with another Albert
Ziegler who was a politician and his grandfather would from time to time
received messages (phone calls?) of a not so nice nature intended for he
other Albert Ziegler. To avoid this he changed the spelling to Zeigler so he
would not be listed in the directories next to the other Albert.
I would be interested in corresponding with anyone who is descended from
either of these families.
Mike Ziegler
