i connected by where sam zeigler lived and the will of nicholas zeigler
Deed of Gift. Here is the first with corrections as well as the others which I finally
transcribed. It is pretty much as written. I left in a lot of their errors. So it is not
correct by current standards.
Deeds of Gift, 4 Feb 1820, Richland Co SC, Nicholas Zeigler to Children Catherine Dent,
Lewis, Louisa, Henry and William, and grand-daughter Polly C Dent

State of South Carolina. Know all men by these presents that I Nicholas Zeigler in
consideration of the natural bond and affection which I have and bear unto my daughter
Catherine (Dent) wife of William Dent and also for divers other other good causes and
considerations me thereunto moving have given granted confirmed and delivered and by these
presents do give grant confirm and deliver unto my Said daughter Catherine Dent the
following three negro Slaves, to wit John Hannah and Sampson to have and to hold the Said
Negro slaves to my Said daughter Catherine Dent her heirs and assigns forever also I give
and grant to my said daughter Catherine Dent one other negro Slave named Mariah to have
and to hold the said negro slave Mariah unto my Said daughter Catherine Dent her heirs and
her assigns forever in trust to and Further uses & purposes hereafter mentioned that
is to say in trust and confidence that my Said daughter shall possess and enjoy the
benefit labor & service of sai!

to have and to hold the Said negro Slaves unto the Said Lewis Zeigler his heirs and

one Years or from and after and after the day on which I think Proper make a former
delivery of the Said negro Slaves to my Sincer Son before he attains the age of twenty one
years or from and after the day of my death if I should die before my Said Son attains the
