I’m afraid I don’t have as much information on the John Zahn family as I thought. I have
been doing research on the brother of Ida Zahn, nee Scharer, and so I have more
information on her family. Mrs. Zahn’s parents were Loren and Christina Scharer. The
family also spelled the name Scherrer.
The Scharer’s married on September 24, 1870 in Syracuse. Her name at the time was Bensing
(also spelled Benzing) and she was a widow. The Scharer’s had five children: Sophie (b:
1872); Henry (b: 1/75); Ida (b: 11/77); Lawrence (b: 3/80) and Julia (b: 6/83). Henry was
a soldier and was killed in the war in 1901; Lawrence was a laborer and later a polisher;
Julia was a hairdresser as I recall and married Charles R Holmes, an engineer in a
hospital; Sophie married a Louis Busse or Bussy or Bussey; and Ida married John Zahn. The
family lived most of the time at 123 Seward Street.
Christina Scharer was previously married to Jacob Benzing on November 29, 1857 and there
were four children: Ellen (b: 1/59); George (b: 2/61); Emma (b: 9/63) and Edwin (b:
8/66). Christina’s maiden name was Klein. Mr. Benzing died of consumption on December 2,
1867. Ellen married a man named Johnson and Emma a man named Eschauer.
Mrs. Scharer died in 1906 and Mr. Scharer in 1913 and both are buried in Assumption
Cemetery.
John Zahn married Ida sometime in 1904 and according to the City directory they lived at
2416 Lodi. His occupation was listed as a driver. They lived at that address until 1919
and then he is listed as a boarder at 510 W. Ostrander. He disappears from the Syracuse
City directory in 1921. I could find no trace of him after that date so he either died or
moved.
I thought John Zahn might have served in the Army but I could find no pension for him.
Sorry that is all I have. If you know something of Mrs. Zahn (Ida) I would appreciate
hearing from you.
