Hi
I'm new to this list. I'm hoping someone has a clue for me.
After years of researching my surname George, I find out it was originally
Zacharias/Zachariah? This story is told by several different branches of the family. I
believe it was my 4th G'Grandfather who changed his name. When he married Mary
(George?), he was asked by her father to take her last name because there were no heirs.
I believe it was Lewis George who changed his surname because the story about how they
ended up in Alabama in 1823? is the same.
I am looking for information on a Lewis George/Zacharias? b 1790 in Laurens SC, married
Mary b 1792 or 1793, also in Laurens SC. These dates were taken from census records. He
served in the War of 1812. He received a land grant for land in Alabama. They came by ship
through Mobile AL. and traveled by wagon to the Bibb Co. area of AL and bought land in
1823. I can trace my line back to Lewis, but no further. He named one of his son's
Zachariah, he is my direct line.
I appreciate any help you can offer.
Susan Tomasz
