John:
I have been listening(reading) with great interest! I just don't have anything
helpful to add. As a young boy (Age 0 to 11) I lived in Lee County near the Powell River.
Mom would walk us down the hill and we'd swim in the river. I have often wondered if
the house in which I was born was on one of those land tracts Zachariah dealt on Powell
River. The house was pretty much directly south of York Methodist Church on Highway 58.
Here is my connection: Zachariah > Jeremiah > Johnson > Harve Nelson > Johnce
> Daniel > Me(Martin Ancil Wells. Please keep posting anything you know.
Blessings,
Martin Wells

The New River Notes website has been most helpful in the search. There is no doubt in my
mind that "our" Zachariah Wells was the same man who lived in Wilkes County.
However, it appears that you and I seem to be the only two people interested in this
search. I wonder how many folks are listening in and not commenting. As always, thanks for
your comments. BTW, I will be in England in September and plan a second visit to St.
Olaf's and Southwark. The George Inn in Southwark is still standing (built in 1676).
We are planning aluncheon there.

Found the following letter that was posted on the Zachariah Wells Rootsweb
mailing list in October of 2000. I thought you might want to add the Wilkes County
info to your timeline. The sources are listed. Greetings!
Well I found someone who had some great lookup materials and I requested they
check Ol' Zack in NC for us. The two books involved are:
Clarence Ratliff's book on "Taxpayers in NC"
Alvaretta Register's book on "NC State Census'"
I received these results for my look up requests on Ol' Zack.
There is a Zachariah Wells listed in the Yaxpayers book, WIleks COunty, NC
1782 - this we have seen before in several other references. Not sure if this
is the Tory who was hung, although there is the story the one who was hung
was from out of GA or SC, I can;t remember.
The second book revealed there was a Zachariah Wells listed in the state of
NC Census for Wilkes County in 1787. The lsiting is as follows:
1 White Male 21-60
4 White Males <21 or >60
5 White Females
He does not appear in teh 1790 NC or VA census, however according to the
great look up person, she says much of VA's census was lost in fire and is
reconstructed only for parts of the state.
I know I haven't been researching for long, compared to the more established
family researchers out there, but I don't recall seeing the 1787 Wilkes
County NC census before and if I had I don't recall it. But based on some of
the other data out there about some of Ol' Zacks children, like Jemima's
records that say she was born in NC and several other bits for others which
say they were born in NC this may be the info to show he was in NC as late as
1787. It shows possibly eight children, if yo consider that 1 of the white
females is his wife.
Just thought you all would be interested.
I also had the same look up person check the Judith McGhan book Virginia Will
Records, but she says there is no record of him in this book.
I thanked the lady and told her I appreciated her time and effort, as they
generally do not do multiple look ups for one individual at the same time. I
felt she was outstanding in this help.
Any comments or thoughts would be appreciated.
Claude E. Wells       (from Andy 2017) I also saw where Zachariah is listed on
the newrivernotes site for Wilkes County that he paid taxes in 1787 for 300 acres and 1
poll in Nals district.  -----Original Message-----

had lived. Itis believed that Francis moved to this farm in 1802, after selling his
otherfarm to Cox. This farm in five tracts, totaling 394 acres, is referred to as
the"Wells place" in several deeds made in the settlement of Francis's
estate. When Francis died in December, 1807, he wasburied in the family cemetery on this
farm, where his father was buried. Now owned by the State of North Carolina, this farm is
part of the New River Park System. There are plans to make thisfarm headquarters for the
Park System and to rebuild a typical log house on thespot where Francis and Rebecca lived.
