Subject: Wells-PA and OH
Patricia -
I have a few things that may be of interest, or may not. As you say, the
name
Wells is so common that it is difficult to research. And with names
like
Robert and John -- well, I wish our ancestors had chosen more unique first
names.
>From Hamilton Co., Ohio Marriage Records (1808-1820) and Wills

Marie Dickore, pub. 1959:

In Clermont Co., OH Tax list of 1810 we have:
Wells - Aaron, Joseph, Robert, William
In Hamilton Co. OH 1810 we have Samuel Wells in Columbia Twp. (may be the
Samuel who was a member of the Richard Wells clan from Harford Co. MD,
came
to Pennsylvania and on to Jefferson Co. IN along with our John Boyd
Wells)
In Fayette Co. PA there was a Tunis Wells with wife Margaret. He d. and
left
a Will in Will Book No. 1, pages 91 and 92. Entered for probate on
June
19,
1809. He left the following heirs:
wife Margaret
sons John, James, Richard, William
daughters Nancy, Polly, Betsy, Margaret, Rebecca, Charlotte.
This Tunis Wells, according to the History of Fayette (p. 618), by Ellis,
surveyed 423 acres in 1784 in Jefferson Twp, obtaine a patent in 1790. He
settled there in 1780. His first wife died, and he m 2) Margaret Williams.
He
had 6 children by his first wife, and the following by his second
wife:
Mary,
Joseph, Rachel, Elizabeth, Margaret, James, Jacob, and Charlotte.
Tunis is
buried at Dunlap Creek Church.
>From Fayette Co. PA Deed Book A, p. 330 - Nov. 6, 1790
John Wells, son of John, heir at law of the estate of my brother
James Wells, late of Fayette Co. makes this deed to John Wells, son of
Richard. James was granted 80 acres on Georges Creek on April 21, 1787.
This
is the property that is being sold. Signed by John Wells, son of
John,
Richard Wells and Richard Brown. On Dec. 11, 1790, Rachel Wells "one of
the
subscribing parties to the foregoing" signs the deed.
Deed Book A, p. 200 - Jan. 16, 1788 - Philip Davis and Samuel Davis of
Springhill Twp. sell to John Wells of Union Town 60 acres on the waters of
Grassy Run" in Springhill Twp.
>From History of Fayette Co. PA by Ellis:
There was a Levi Wells who owned property in Georges Twp, Tayette Co. in
1787.
He was also on 1790 Census.
p. 574 - Mt. Moriah Baptist Church - Oct. 30, 1784 - had 27 members
including
William Wells and Rebecca Wells.
p. 368 - Benjamin Wells came to Connellsville in 1794 and opened the first
store in town. He had sons Charles and John, both of whom "emigrated to
the
West country".
I believe the John Wells who was in the Westmoreland Co. PA census in 1790
is
my ancestor and that of Ardath Blue.
Wells in Fayette Co. 1790 Census:
Benjamin 332-2 Springhill Twp.
David 20300 " "
William 22300 " "
Joseph 50200 Menallen Twp.
Thomas 10400 " "
Levi 12400 Georges Twp.
Tunnis 33500 Washington Twp.
Samuel 10500 Luzerne Twp.
Well, anyway, probably none of this is connected with your family, but I
thought I would send it along anyway.
Good luck with your search.
