Hello Andrew,
Thank you again for your rundown, as you see it, of the family.
Regarding Robert, of which I am a direct descendent....first, the facts.
Robert married Mary Downing Jan 5, 1778 according to Washington County
Records. They were married by Rev. John George Young, a circut minister.
His area was Conococheaque, Clear Springs, Funkstown, Hagerstown, Owens
Spring.
The children of this marriage are:
Solomon, married Mary Judd and Jane Chapman.
Issac, married Margaret Reddick.
Anna, married James Callon
Aaron, married Mary Adams
John D.married Rachael Wells of the Wells/Wiggins line.
Robert Jr. never married,
Jesse, married Hannah Adams, Mary Huntington and Nancy Cherry.
Mary D, never married.
Nathan,married Catherine Davis
Eli married Eliza Mahan
Each line is documented however, the names of children of Issac, Jesse,
and Nathan are unknown.
The other fact that is recorded is the 1791 Mason County, Ky. Tax Roll
which shows a Robert Wells Sr. and a Robert Wells Jr. The next year, the
senior is missing.
This is why I strongly believe that our Robert's father is a Robert.
The entire family moved from Mason County, Ky about 1805 to Clermont
County, Ohio where they are well documented.
Robert is documented as fighting in the Rev. War and in the History of
Clermont County a biography was published in 1880, stating he fought for
his beloved state of Virginia......leading me to believe he was born in
that state.
That's it for the facts as I know them.
Supposition is a whole other alley.....I have been up and down the
Conococheaque trail, especially since they were married in that neck of
the woods. Mary Downing is still without parents, but I am working on
that. Life would be so much easier if the blood types of W006 and ours
matched...the names certainly do, as do the stomping grounds.. My father
always was under idea the family was Welsh. As I sat in a Welsh pub for
the first time, the atmosphere felt as if I had come home....who
knows...It was the oddest sensation.
At least we found some lost members of the clan and discovered that
Aaron/ Wiggins line is more closely attached than previously thought to
Robert. And who knew of Zachariah(whose family tales tell of an argument
with his brother Robert . Then Zach took off to be on his own). Oh
family lore...and then there is Augustine. Robert is the family with the
mutation...who knows what causes that.
We will muddle this all thru together...just need to look under some more
rocks.
